Chris Evans is returning to television. The actor hasn’t had a role on the small screen since the 2000 miniseries Opposite Sex. But a new report states that Evans has signed on to join the series Defending Jacob which is being developed for Apple.

Defending Jacob is based upon the 2012 bestselling novel of the same name, written by William Landay. The story revolves around a 14 year old boy accused of murder and his father’s attempts to defend him from the charges.

The book is a one off and not particularly long at 421 pages. So it’s likely that Defending Jacob will be a single season series for Apple’s upcoming streaming platform. This also frees up Chris Evans to return to Hollywood after filming on Defending Jacob wraps. Whether that includes future Marvel movies after Avengers 4 is to be determined.

Paramount Television and Anonymous Content are producing the series for Apple’s service. The show is being executive produced, written and ran by Mark Bomback. Bomback is perhaps best known for writing War for the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Additional executive producers on Defending Jacob are Rosalie Swedlin, Adam Shulman and Morten Tyldum. Tyldum will also serve as director for the series. He was previously nominated for an Oscar due to his work on 2015’s The Imitation Game. And his most recent directorial work can be seen within the pilot of Amazon’s Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.

Outside of Defending Jacob, there are a few other prominent shows in the works for Apple. Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston will lead the cast of an exclusive drama which is expected to run at least 2 seasons. Jason Momoa will lead the sci-fi series, See. There’s an exclusive development deal with Oprah Winfrey, and M. Knight Shyamalan is developing a psychological thriller series too.

We likely won’t see any of these Apple shows for sometime, so to catch up on what’s coming sooner, why not checkout Nerd Much?’s list of all the upcoming television shows and movies headed our way for the Halloween season.
