Netflix has announced that they are teaming up with the creators of BBC’s Sherlock for an exciting new mini-series. Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss will develop a Dracula series for the streaming platform and BBC One based upon the character’s iconic take in Bram Stoker’s classic novel.

Moffat and Gatiss are listed as co-creators, writers and executive producers on the Dracula series. In a joint statement, the duo said “There have always been stories about great evil. What’s special about Dracula, is that Bram Stoker gave evil its own hero.”

The Dracula series will consist of three feature length episodes of roughly 90 minutes each. In Netflix’s announcement, they state that Moffat and Gatiss’ story “will re-introduce the world to Dracula, the vampire who made evil sexy. In Transylvania in 1897, the blood drinking Count is drawing his plans against Victorian London. And be warned: the dead travel fast.”

While Netflix will roll out the series for most of the world, BBC One will host it in the UK and Ireland as well as any territories in which Netflix isn’t available. Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, hyped the announcement by stating “Steven and Mark’s ingenious vision for Dracula is as clever as it is chilling.”

The complete slate of executive producers on the Dracula series are the aforementioned Moffat and Gatiss. Larry Tanz, Vice President of Content Acquisition at Netflix is attached. Ben Irving for BBC and Sue Vertue of Hartwood Films are as well.

Timing for the Dracula series wasn’t offered. It’s likely that production will begin at some point next year for a release window of 2020. But with the pedigree of talent in Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss helming the show, and creator friendly platforms like Netflix and BBC attached, there’s a lot to get excited about for this upcoming adaptation of Stoker’s work.
