e3 2016 predictions

**Update 6/17: We’ve updated this list with the results using everything that happened (and didn’t happen) at E3 2016.**

Our E3 2016 countdown has begun, and with the recent influx in announcements, news, and information being announced, it’s time for us to make our very own E3 2016 predictions here at Nerd Much.

Now, earlier this year, those who follow our site might remember that we crafted a list of 12 Bold Predictions for Gaming in 2016and so far, we’re 3 for 12, with the majority of the announcements not being announced yet. Not bad in the grand scheme of things, if I do say so myself, but now it’s time to make our specific E3 predictions to get the conversations going on our hopes and dreams. Some of these educated guesses will be bold and unlikely, but we’re trying to keep them all within the realm of possibility, especially since we already have a ton of information regarding gaming’s biggest show of the year (and a quickly growing E3 2016 game list).

Here are 15 solid E3 2016 predictions that we think aren’t too far-fetched, and the likelihood of their announcement:

1. The Current PS4 & Xbox One Models Will Get Price Drops.

ps4 price drop

There are whispers — now, admittedly loud whispers — of a new wave of console upgrades coming. I’m talking about the PS4K, and whatever the hell Microsoft calls their impending Xbox One upgrade. But with these new PS4s and Xbox Ones, it likely means we’re going to see a PS4 and Xbox One price drop on all of the older models for the 2016 holiday season.

Likelihood: 85%

Result: +1/2 point

Unfortunately, we didn’t see a PS4 price drop as we were expecting. However, Microsoft did announce that the Xbox One original has dropped to $279, and you’ll receive an extra controller with it. So, +1/2 point for us.

2. Skate 4 Will Be Announced With a 2016 Release Date.

e3 2016 predictions

If EA wants to continue making money, their next game announcement has to be Skate 4. If you look at EA’s Instagram account, just about every comment on ANY photo is something about Skate 4 (literally, these are the comments on every image they share). It’d be ridiculous for EA to just completely ignore their fans, although it wouldn’t be the first time.

But it’s not just about Instagram photos, of course, as there is plenty of other evidence that suggests we’re indeed getting a Skate 4 announcement at E3 2016. First and foremost, there’s the alleged leaked Skate 4 box artwhich not only would confirm the existence of a new Skate game for Xbox One, but also would explain why we haven’t received the promised backwards compatibility for Skate 3 (the box art claims that it would come with a Skate 3 copy).

Likelihood: 90%

Result: 0 Points

EA surprisingly didn’t announce a Skate 4 at E3 2016, and it’s one of the main reasons we think EA needs to change its strategy for E3 2017.

3. Red Dead Redemption 2 Will Be Officially Announced.

red dead redemption 2 e3 2016

Out of all of the E3 2016 games we want to see announced, Red Dead Redemption 2 is at the top of the list. There have been leaks and whispers that suggest it does, in fact, exist, and with the most recent map leak, we feel that an announcement is imminent. We can’t wait to see what Rockstar has in store for the next iteration of the Red Dead franchise, and hopefully, they’ll bring along another Undead Nightmare with it (we consider it one of the best zombie games of all-time).

E3 will have the eyes of all gamers, and RDR2 news would definitely make some waves on social media. We’re not sure if it’ll be announced during the Microsoft or the Sony conference, but expect Rockstar to certainly have a presence at one of them.

Likelihood: 95%

Results: 0 Points

We are just as surprised as you are, but Rockstar had zero presence at E3 2016.

4. Elder Scrolls 6 Teaser Will Be Bethesda’s “One Last Thing”.

elder scrolls 6 news

It’s tough to imagine Bethesda having another E3 press conference without announcing news about an Elder Scrolls of some sorts. After their incredibly well-done presser at last year’s E3, where they announced Fallout 4, showed some DOOM, and blew the community away, it’s going to be tough for them to top it; they only have so many IPs, after all.

But any sort of Elder Scrolls-related news that doesn’t involve Elder Scrolls Online would be welcomed by gamers, and we have to believe that, with the popularity of Skyrim, Bethesda is working on an Elder Scrolls 6. It’s probably too early for them to unveil any gameplay, but ending their show with an Elder Scrolls 6 trailer would absolutely blow away the gaming community, ending their conference on an ultra high note.

Likelihood: 65%

Results: 0 Points

Looks like we were wrong on this one as well, although we did find out Bethesda is working on an Elder Scrolls 6.

5. Microsoft Will Announce a Special Edition Battlefield Xbox One Console.

xbox one battlefield console

We’ve already seen that Microsoft and Battlefield 1 are joined at the hip, with Xbox One gamers being able to play it before PS4 owners (and Xbox One owners with EA Access will be able to play it even sooner). I think it’s possible — I’d almost say probable, even — that Microsoft and EA will team up for a Special Edition Battlefield Xbox One console.

We’ve seen numerous special edition consoles in the past, including a PS4 Call of Duty edition console. With Sony closely aligning themselves with Call of Duty, Microsoft is likely to back Battlefield fans, and a Special Edition Battlefield Xbox One console is good marketing move that would fuel the Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare vs. Battlefield 1 battle.

Likelihood: 60%

Results: 0 Points

Nothing yet, but it’s likely still coming.

6. The Sims 5 Will Be Announced for Early 2017.

sims expansions

After EA absolutely botched Sims 4, and SimCity‘s most recent outing, we have to imagine that they’re going to quickly look to turn their franchise around with a Sims 5 announcement. Before you say “it’s too soon”, keep in mind that EA is going to want to fix the franchise’s image right now (not a year from now). Sims has always been a cash cow, thanks to the multiple expansions that are typically tacked on after their release.

But EA would have to really bring some major changes to the franchise this time around, and not ship out a miserable half-assed game. If they announce a seemingly featureless affair, consider the Sims dead.

Likelihood: 70%

Results: 0 Points

EA didn’t mention anything about The SimsSimCity, or even a single Simoleon.

7. God of War 4 Will Be Officially Unveiled.

god of war 4 e3 2016

At this point, the God of War 4 announcement is all but official. There was a massive leak of concept art showing a new Kratos set in a Norse setting (a beautiful, color setting, I might add), and it’s all legitimate. Now, we just have to wait for the official announcement — the only question is if Sony will be able to hold out another month before officially announcing its existence.

Likelihood: 99.5%

Results: +1 Point

God of War 4 was unveiled, and it surprised a lot of E3 viewers by being much more than we originally expected. You can watch the trailer in our E3 2016 trailers round-up.

8. BioWare’s New IP Will Be Unveiled During EA’s Presser.

bioware e3 2016

BioWare has teased that they have a new IP that has been in the oven for quite some time, and that it’s already playable, and we’re fully expecting their new franchise to be unveiled at E3 2016. The teaser came from BioWare’s senior director of creative development Alistair McNally, who noted that he wore the game’s logo on a T-shirt and walked around at GDC without anyone noticing. What’s more, EA has also teased that they have a new IP that will be revealed at this year’s show, so we’re 99.5% sure that BioWare will unveil their new IP during EA’s press conference. Which, if this and our other EA predictions are true, then EA is going to have a great year.

Likelihood: 99.5%

Results: 0 Points

Nope, we didn’t get anything from BioWare except a brief Mass Effect trailer.

9. Persona 5 Will Get a US Release Date.

With last week’s Persona 5 news blowout, and a Japanese release date being given, we’re just waiting on a U.S. release date. We are expecting that the game’s western release date will be announced during Sony’s E3 conference this year.

Likelihood: 85%

Results: +1/2 Point

The Persona 5 U.S. release date was, indeed, set, but it came at the end of last week, technically before E3 started. So, we’re only getting half.

10. Blizzard Will Announce Some Overwatch Content Updates.

Over 9 million people played the Overwatch beta, and the general consensus is that it’s great but light on content. With the game set to be released later this month, and Blizzard wanting their new IP to stick, it’s quite possible that they’re going to announce the first wave of new Overwatch content at E3. Sure, we’ll get new heroes, but I think the fans want to see just a straight up Team Deathmatch and other modes as well. If Blizz wants to make this a full experience, we’re expecting some news at this year’s show.

Likelihood: 75%

Results: +1 Point

Overwatch’s Game Director, Jeff Kaplan, gave us an update on where Overwatch is heading and what they’re working on right now.

11. Nintendo Has Something Up Their Sleeves.

Nintendo is in trouble for the year if they don’t plan on making any announcements at this year’s E3. We recently found out that Nintendo won’t have a Directand that they’re only planning to show The Legend of Zelda Wii U on the show floor. Oddly, they aren’t announcing the Nintendo NX at E3, either. So, we have to wonder if Nintendo just plans to take a mulligan at E3 2016, or if they secretly have some announcements planned. At least give us some new 3DS titles that we can play this fall, because as it stands right now, both 3DS owners and Wii U owners aren’t going to have much to play this holiday season.

Likelihood: 40%

Results: +1 Point

Nintendo not only showed off incredible Legend of Zelda gameplay, not only revealed the subtitle, Breath of the Wild, but they also revealed Ever Oasis for the 3DS. What’s more, their booth was absolutely well-done, and we now understand why they only brought one game with them to show.

12. Neither Sony Nor Microsoft Will Promote Any TV Content.

Sony tried their hand at TV with Powers, and it was absolutely dreadful. Somehow, it is getting another season, but the majority of fans aren’t interested in Sony’s TV offerings. While it’s probable that Sony will mention PlayStation Vue, they’re not going to mention any new TV series in development.

And as far as Microsoft is concerned, the company quickly found out that gamers don’t want low-budget TV shows and that they should stick to games. I’m not even sure that Microsoft will mention any new TV apps at all, but they’ll definitely not announce any new TV shows or series that will be exclusive to Xbox One.

Likelihood: 85%

Results: +1 Point

Oh, the sweet, sweet sound of no TV announcements.

13. Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft, and Sony Will Talk About Mobile Games While We All Take a Bathroom Break Because We Don’t Care About Mobile.

e3 2016 mobile games

Those who attend E3 mostly don’t want to hear about mobile games; we want the real deal, the big kahunas. Mobile games don’t excite most console gamers, but that’s not going to stop Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft, and Sony from announcing some sort of mobile game presence so that they can rake in those sweet, sweet in-game microtransactions. So, go into their conferences fully expecting each one to talk about mobile games, giving you the perfect opportunity for a short bathroom break.

Likelihood: 100%

Results: 0 Points

We’re just as surprised as you are.

14. Sony Will Announce The Last Guardian’s Release Date.

The Last Guardian showed pretty well on-stage at last year’s E3 with many onlookers being impressed by the grandiose of it all. There have been rumors that the game will launch at some point in October, with suggestions that it will launch alongside the PS4 Neo in 4K. We’re not sure about all that, but if The Last Guardian doesn’t get a release date at E3, then it’s probable that it will be pushed out of 2016 (which would be a major bummer). I don’t think any of that is going to happen. Instead, I firmly believe that Sony will announce a Last Guardian release date.

Likelihood: 88%

Results: +1 point

We now know that The Last Guardian release date has been set for October 2016.

15. WildStar Is Coming to PS4.

As far as pretty out-there theories and E3 2016 predictions, this has to be my strangest one. I believe that there is a WildStar PS4 version in the works, and I’ll tell you why. Not only has there been talks about a console version of the game by Carbine Studios, the developer, but we’ve already seen a number of free-to-play MMOs make their way to consoles (DCUO, Neverwinter, and most recently Star Trek Online). As far as WildStar‘s biggest problem, it’s its population, or more appropriately, the lack-thereof. Bringing WildStar to the PS4, which has over 36 million players, makes perfect sense, and it would give WildStar the third wind it needs to become a successful game.

I’ll also note that I had a conversation over two years ago with the former president of Carbine Studios, Jeremy Gaffney, about bringing controller support to WildStar, and at the time, he noted that it was something his team was looking at. So, there’s that.

Likelihood: 65%

Welp, I’ve been wrong before!
