The reboot craze has taken its ugly hand and grabbed another one of our dearly beloved, as news has just hit that there is a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot on the way.
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot is being produced by Will Smith under his Overbrook Entertainment banner, and the show is currently in the very early stages of development. According to TVLINE, the Fresh Prince reboot will put a new spin on the fish-out-of-water tale while “maintaining the spirit of the original series.”
Overbook will soon begin shopping the show around to networks in the coming weeks. As of right now, we don’t know if the reboot will be a continuation of the series (which is doubtful, given Smith’s movie career), or if it will be an entirely new family and an entirely new cast.
The original Fresh Prince ran for six seasons on NBC in the 90s. According to the report, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt noted at the TV Critics Association Summer Press Tour that he would “be happy to talk to Will about it.”
We’re not sure what to think about this. On one hand, the Fresh Prince is the second all-time greatest comedy TV series of all time (only behind Seinfeld). But on the other hand, we can’t picture anyone else but Will Smith playing a fish-out-of-water role properly.
The characters of the original are way too memorable to have any characters even sort of resemble them in the reboot, in which case, would it really be a reboot at all? Also, it just wouldn’t be the same without the Will Smith-James Avery dynamic.
It’s also worth noting that show’s creators, Susan Stevenson and Andy Borowitz, were a couple during the show’s run, so who knows what their relationship is like nowadays. Likely, whatever network picks this up (Netflix, anyone?) would have to find a new team of writers. Either way, I think it’s safe to say I’m very excited and absolutely terrified at the same time.
