Overwatch Director Jeff Kaplan wrote on the Overwatch Battle.net forums stating that Blizzard is directly objecting “to the use of mouse and keyboard on console.” I’m assuming he means players who are on the Xbox One or PS4 and using the latter devices instead of the normal controllers. Kaplan is likely concerned about the accuracy advantage that such players have in the FPS multiplayer.
Kaplan goes on to explain that, “we have contacted both first-party console manufacturers and expressed our concern about the use of mouse and keyboard and input conversion devices. We have lobbied and will continue to lobby for first-party console manufacturers to either: Disallow mouse and keyboard and input conversion devices or openly and easily support mouse and keyboard for ALL players.”
After similar requests to ban exploiters as cheaters, this seems a little too overboard. There is just no way Sony and Microsoft would agree to this. It’s one thing to control the content of your game, but you can’t control how people play it. More so, you can’t tell the console gods to somehow prevent people from using the mouse and keyboard they paid for while playing Overwatch. Especially when I’m not even sure it’s possible to detect and ban input converters.
They might make the mouse and keyboard available for everyone, which would work well with Microsoft’s Play Anywhere program, but who knows if Sony would go for it too. It also seems like far too much hassle to divide players by input devices.
