Psychonauts 2 Publisher Announced Alongside New Footage

Starbreeze Studios has been announced as the Psychonauts 2 publisher in the most recent developer video for the upcoming crowd-funded sequel.

Double Fine founder Tim Schafer confirmed the partnership in the above video which also features plenty of new game footage. Starbreeze is investing $8 million in the production of Psychonauts 2. In return, the studio will receive 60 percent of the game’s profits. Double Fine will retain the rights to the IP.

“We are excited to be working with them because they are from a development background just like us, and so they know where we’re coming from,” said Schafer. “And also, they’ll know when we are lying so we won’t be doing any of that, so it’s great!”

Starbreeze has previously been the publisher and developer of games like Payday 2 and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.

The video also teases a much bigger look at the game’s final art. What we see is much more painterly than the first game. While not quite cell-shaded, it definitely looks like a Saturday morning cartoon come to life. There is also a short tease for a new location, but you’ll have to trust the developers’ faces since they turn the camera away from the reveal.

We are happy to see that there is finally a Psychonauts 2 publisher. The game is scheduled for a 2018 release on Xbox One, PS4, and PC. If you can’t wait that long, the PSVR exclusive Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin releases later this month. It takes place between the first and second titles.
