Netflix has announced that the first season of an animated Castlevania series will be coming to the streaming service sometime this year. The site itself lists it as a four-part series and each episode running 30 minutes or so.
The official description states that the show will follow “the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself.” If that sounds a lot like a game you know, you’d be right. Producer Adi Shankar confirmed that the series is an adaptation of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. He elaborated that “this is very much Castlevania done in the vein of Game of Thrones.”
For those that don’t remember, there wasn’t really much to the plot of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. It starred Trevor Belmont in his fight to stop Dracula from turning everything “bad” and “evil”. There are other characters, but their motivations are not anymore complicated that Belmont’s.
Nonetheless, Shankar is very excited and not shy about saying so, with comments to IGN like “[the series is] going to be R-rated as f***,” and it will be “America’s first animated series for adults.”
Indeed, the producer went so far as to say that “this is going to be the best f*****g video game adaptation we’ve had to date.” High praise indeed, given the history of video game to film adaptations. Shankar also mentioned on Facebook that season two will be coming in 2018, though Netflix hasn’t announced that part officially yet.
