Well, I certainly thought I’d never see the day that Nintendo announces an expansion pack for a Zelda game.
Though it does make sense because of the open-world nature of Breath of the Wild, as Nintendo developer Eiji Aonuma pointed out the company would like “to offer more for players to experience within it. With this new Expansion Pass, we hope that fans will play, explore and enjoy the game even more.”
The expansion pack will be $19.99, starting March 3rd, and will include three sets of content. The pack will be available for the Switch and the Wii U, with no difference between the two. The first is available immediately and can be found in the Great Plateau where “three new treasure chests will appear.” The chests will contain “a shirt with a Nintendo Switch logo that Link can wear” and “the other two will deliver useful items.” Super specific, I know. I’m sure it’ll be something like a rare weapon to pound the Bokoblins with. As to the shirt, I hope it has more uses than product placement.
The second set “is scheduled to launch this summer, and will include the addition of a Cave of Trials challenge, a new hard mode, and a new feature for the in-game map.” Well, that’s exciting, both an old favorite challenge and a new hard mode. Maybe it will be a lot like Master Quest for Ocarina of Time, so this pack is probably worth it just for that depending on how merciless the mode is.
The third and final set of content “will launch in Holiday 2017, and adds new challenges that will let players enjoy a new dungeon and a new original story.” Why, it’s just like a DLC for other games! But it’s only $20, how long can this story really be? Is this worth it or Nintendo just trying to get more money out of its fans? Let us know in the comments below!
