After the mildly enthusiastic announcement of Skyrim on the Nintendo Switch, it’s good to hear that Bethesda still has a few aces up it’s sleeve. In an interview with Glixel, Bethesda’s executive producer Todd Howard confirmed that the company is working on three brand new IPs, one of them being a mobile game. With the recent success of Fallout Shelter and Overwatch, it seems that Bethesda wants to keep that momentum going, “we’re bigger now and we do want to be putting out more stuff.”
According to Howard, Bethesda has “two larger projects” that fit into this and “are more classically the scale of what we do, but even bigger. We overlap the projects so we’re working on them at the same time, but they’re staggered. I can’t talk a lot about them, but I can say that they’re bigger than anything we’ve ever done. They’re a bit different, but definitely in the wheelhouse that people are used to from us.”
Perhaps another open-world shooter like Fallout? Or something more akin to high-fantasy? Who knows, but we likely won’t find out soon. These sound far too new to be announced at E3, though it is always possible. The third new game that Howard refers is the most intriguing of them all, as it’s to be a new mobile game. Apparently, the success of Fallout Shelter wasn’t something Bethesda expected:
More From Nerd Much?:
“it was a huge surprise to us. Particularly how successful it was. We’ve got – what – 75 million players now?” Nonetheless, the ball is rolling and Howard points out that “the one takeaway was that [Fallout Shelter] is somewhat unique, so for the thing we’re doing next we wanted to continue to do that. We need to not look too hard at what’s working well for other people. The game we’re doing is a very different style game, unique in the space. There isn’t something else we’re looking at for style.”
Always good to hear, especially for the mobile market. Something new and fresh on Google Play is hard to find to be sure. Bethesda has tended to stick to the Fallout and Skyrim franchises until recently with Dishonored, Doom, and Prey, so it will be interesting to see what the company comes up with next.
