After being leaked in a Target listing, turns out it wasn’t a mistake: Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is getting a sequel and it’s called Middle-earth: Shadow of War.
Hopefully the game is more creative than the title. Warner Bros. has released a trailer today and frankly, it looks awesome. It seems that Talion and Celebrimbor have been toiling away at crafting a ring to destroy Sauron once and for all. And wearing the ring seems to finally split the two, allowing Celebrimbor the freedom to vanish from Talion’s sight.
The game will be released August 22nd, 2017 on the PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, PC, and Project Scorpio. And I believe this is the first game to be announced for the Scorpio, so if nothing else this is more confirmation that it’ll be unveiled at E3.
As to gameplay, the Shadow of War is expanding the Nemesis System, with additional drama-filled story content. The system will also encompass the entire world of the game this time, so the player’s actions will affect environments and characters. Such to the point that it will create a unique world every gameplay, according to Polygon. Most of the uniqueness is likely due to the Nemesis Fortresses, which is an amped up strategy part of the game where the player can customize exactly what their strongholds and Orc army looks like.
President of Warner Bros. David Haddad stated his thoughts on the release, “Monolith Productions continues to innovate by introducing deeper, more personalized gameplay experiences, coupled with authentic storytelling. Middle-earth: Shadow of War truly drives the genre forward by taking the Nemesis System to new heights and allowing players to create their own personal journey within Middle-earth.”
