In an interview with Game Rant, GameStop senior director of merchandising Eric Bright was more than happy to contribute his opinion on the Switch as a new console and how it compares to the Wii.
Bright states that the Switch’s initial sales have been off the charts and “could possibly eclipse the Wii.” Apparently it’s been a very long time since GameStop has seen software and accessory sales quite so high.
Despite this optimism, Nintendo itself only predicted that 40 million units would be sold over a period of four years. This number is no where near the 100 million units the Wii has sold to date.
As always, it’s the games that sell a console and though The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is doing very well at that, it’s only one game.
Nintendo still has to release the usual console sellers, like Mario Kart, Mario, Sonic, and Pokémon. And for some, those first party games might not be enough, especially when Sony and Microsoft continue to pump out exclusive games matched by no other. Well, Microsoft might be a little slow on such at the moment, but we all know it’ll spring back eventually.
As a salesman is wont to do, Bright also mentioned that GameStop is putting together a bundle of accessories to go with the Switch. It will likely be Zelda-themed, as that is the highest selling game for the console at the moment. Though I think Bright is forgetting just what those other games are and why Zelda shines so brightly among them, even if Breath of the Wild wasn’t as great as it is.
