Marvel has released yet another trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and though it doesn’t reveal anything new (it’s all the same footage from the previous trailers), it’s got a fun 80s sitcom feel to it. It couldn’t suit the film more, as Starlord has been stuck in 80s Earth pop culture for over twenty years.
The humor of the films helps too, of course, though I’m not sure the 80s audience would find it quite as amusing as we do. Thieves, mercenaries, bounty hunters, and ex-villain lackeys saving the galaxy would be fairly unusual for back then to be sure.
And who doesn’t love that soundtrack? I can’t tell you how long I’ve had “Break the Chains” by Fleetwood Mac stuck in my head because of these trailers. This trailer is just a fast mix of one-liners and character introductions in perfect 80s style; starting with the age-old “on the next Guardians of the Galaxy“, and then an utterly out of place laugh track, featuring “special guest star, Intergalactic Beast.”
Though I imagine it’s difficult to spoof an already near-spoof movie, Marvel really hit it on the mark this time. However, there is nothing like nostalgia to market a movie and I admit, I’m fine with this one. Guardians of the Galaxy is a good enough movie to support such self-spoofing, and I’m sure the sequel will be too.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 comes out May 5, 2017.
