According to Deadline, Hulu has just announced it’s new show, Runaways, at their Upfront 2017 event. This trailer was recorded by reporter Josh Pico and shows glimpses of the Runaways members, though hardly anything of the parents the group will be fighting against. The series will star Rhenzy Feliz as Alex Wilder, Lyrica Okano as Nico Minoru, Virginia Gardner as Karolina Dean, Ariela Barer as Gert Yorkes, Gregg Sulkin as Chase Stein, and Allegra Acosta as Molly Hernandez.
For those that may not know, Runaways is based on a Marvel comic by the same name. The parents these kids are fighting against call themselves Pride, an apt name for a group of villains to be sure. Who will be playing the parents has not been announced yet, though according to Deadline, James Marsters (Torchwood and Buffy The Vampire Slayer) will be one of them. Marsters has been caught saying that among the teenagers there is no weak link in their talents as actors.
Runaways is expected to begin production later this year and will bow sometime in 2018 on Hulu exclusively. So unfortunately if you have Netflix but not Hulu, you’re out of luck. The show will be executive produced by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, both are known for their work on Gossip Girl and Hart of Dixie.
That said, the trailer was much too brief to really make a judgement on the show. The concept is not a common perspective, as we generally don’t think of the Marvel villains having children in the first place. Thus, it should be given a chance, but it really depends on how the studio’s team handles it.
