Warner Bros. has revealed a teaser today in anticipation of the full trailer for Blade Runner 2049 that will be revealed on Monday. The trailer features most of those that will star in the film, including Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford (who is coming back to play his role as Deckard from the 1982 movie), Ana de Armas, Jared Leto, Robin Wright, and Edward James Olmos (another returning actor to play the same role as Gaff). The film will be released in October of this year, though no date has been confirmed yet.
Blade Runner 2049 is directed by Denis Villeneuve who is know for his work on Arrival and Prisoners. Both critically acclaimed movies that have fans setting high expectations for this new rendition of Blade Runner. It seems that this version is a sequel to Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, where Gosling is actually the new Blade Runner, and Ford is the long-missing more experienced fellow that will help him uncover the dark secrets of the apparent utopia.
Blade Runner (1982), just as the novel it’s based on by Philip K. Dick titled Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, explores what it means to be human and then digs further under that. This isn’t the rosy journey to humanity that most sci-fi media takes, this is the painful, addiction ridden, and blood-soaked kind of humanity. Something that Scott portrayed quite well in his film, even if it wasn’t particularly accurate to the book.
Just as Scott created mastery from Dick’s world, so can Villeneuve. We shall see what might be lost in adaptation and what might be improved upon. Have you read the book? What do you think of these films and what do you expect from the new one? Let us know in the comments below!
