Supergiant Games has announced that their game Pyre will be released July 25th, 2017 on the PS4. It’s the perfect summer game, as it combines the unique gameplay and spectacular storytelling Supergiant is so famous for.
The studio’s most well-known game, Bastion, can probably be attributed for pulling indie games into the limelight. It seems Pyre will not be any different with innovations like a combat system that pits three enemies against your three-member party. In each battle, it’s up to the player’s party to make sure the enemies’ signal flame is extinguished before they do the same to you.
If that isn’t enough to peak your interest, the story includes a wide cast of character assembled by the player in order to fight for their freedom in the land of Downside. Each character is distinctly designed after the equally colorful world, “from hulking demons” to “winged Harps.” Each one exiled for questionable and understandable reasons.
Most interesting of all about Pyre, however, is the apparent lack of game over. The story continues whether you fail or not, and is described as an “interactive narrative” that will never let you lose progress. Supergiant wants the game to “feel personal to you” and ensure that “no two players will experience” the same game. It is not entirely clear what this means, if the narrative simply fits in your death and you are born anew regardless, much like in Bastion, or if it is something else.
There is also the Versus Mode, which is a local PvP (or against an AI) in the games “ritual showdowns.” Not only can you customize your character, but also the battle itself by choosing specific abilities for your character, and stages that greatly effect your gameplay.
Once again, Pyre is coming out July 25, 2017 on the PS4, and it’s one of our most anticipated games of 2017.
