Persona 6 Wishlist: Things We Want From a Persona 5 Sequel (Updated)

Don't change anything about the soundtrack, though.

When I first started the Persona series, I thought nothing could top or improve my first experience with the games, but I was wrong. After hundreds of hours of gameplay, I found each title in the series an improvement on the next. Whether it be battle mechanics, characterization, or just the general story/experience, I was impressed with every title’s ability to improve on the last title.persona 6 wishlist

With the recent release of Persona 5, our hearts were stolen as we fell in love with the immersive universe and the phantom thieves of hearts. As the credits rolled and tears streamed down my face, I thought to myself “nothing could top this”. I felt like over the past 100 or so hours that I made friends with the cast and actually changed the world. However, every time I’ve beaten a mainline Persona title, this has been a reoccurring thought, and ATLUS continues to surprise and surpass our expectations.

In a recent interview with ATLUS Japan, ATLUS stated that their goal was to surpass Persona 5, which is a very large goal considering the outstanding response from the release. How could a game that has received multiple 10/10 review scores and described as a close to perfect title be improved? We have a few ideas to make the experience even better, fresh, and appease both old and new fans of the series.

Same-Sex Relationships

More Nerdy Goodness

In the Persona series, we form bonds and relationships with team members and side characters and learn more about their backgrounds and goals in life. One of these aspects includes romancing a girl if you choose. One major complaint many fans had about Persona 5 was that only the female cast members were romanceable.

Considering the theme of breaking boundaries and fighting against the world, ATLUS missed their chance in Persona 5 to include a same-sex relationship. There were hints of attraction to the protagonist in Yusuke Kitagawa and Yuki Mishima’s confidants, which would have made great romance options. Although Japan is a little behind in same-sex equality in games, for Persona 6 we would like to see the ability to date characters regardless of gender, especially since Persona deals with fighting against the norms of the world.

A Female Protagonist/Choice of Player Gender

Persona has had several male protagonists, but we have had a few front-running ladies in the past. Maya Amano in Persona 2: Eternal Punishment and Minako Arisato in Persona 3: Portable were great characters that added different perspectives to the universe, and in some cases, an entirely new story experience. Whenever Persona 6 releases, it would be nice to have one of two things: either a female protagonist or the choice between a male or female MC. The male protagonists in the Persona series are great, but it would be nice to mix it up in the future. Since ATLUS as a company is evolving at a rapid rate, it wouldn’t be too far off to expect the choice between a male and female MC in a future title, especially since that has been done before with P3P. This would appeal to all fans and make the social experiences fresh and exciting.

An Older, 20-something Cast and Unexplored Setting

There is one thing all of the recent Persona titles have in common: a cast set in a high school. Although high school is considered the prime of one’s life in Japan and has many opportunities for stories, events, and more, it would be nice to see older party members and characters. At one point, the main Persona demographic was in high school, but most of us have grown up. This was revealed in one of their surveys, that said most of the fanbase is in their 20’s now. With games like Devil Survivor, Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment having an older cast, it would be nice to see characters in their 20’s trying to figure out what they want to do with their lives. This allows for many unexplored settings, such as a college campus, a work environment, or maybe even several young adults in different places in their lives coming together. There are so many opportunities with this age demographic, and a college campus would allow for the fun year-round events as well.

A Full Calendar Year and a Bigger World

Persona games run on a day by day calendar system. Although Persona 5 had an extensive calendar, what about a full year? In Persona 3-5, we saw a time skip of a few months between the final battles. If Persona 6 went a full calendar year, it would have potential to be even bigger and have an even longer story. Persona 5’s story was very long but well executed, so the challenge in the new games would be to make sure it doesn’t drag on. Another challenge would be making the world even bigger than the streets of Shibuya. The question is how. In past interviews, it was revealed that Persona 5 was supposed to be about backpacking and making a trip around the world. Maybe Persona 6 could feature several locations across Japan or even internationally, which would make it even bigger and the full calendar more justified. There’s lots of potential with this theme, including changing the world city by city, or fighting enemies in different locations.

New Combat that Brings In (Even More) Elements from the past Persona/Shin Megami Tensei  titles

In Persona 5, we saw some new gameplay changes that made the experience even better, more refined and an overall improvement on the past. For example, elements from Persona 1 and 2 were brought back in like demon negotiation, guns, and Psi/Nuclear skills. Demon negotiation was probably the best change to the combat, so making that even more in depth would be amazing for the future. For example, having long, meaningful conversations with demons or having them interact more could be one additional change.  It also would be pretty cool to have demons become party members like in Nocturne, or have characters change into the demons like in Digital Devil Saga. Themes/story elements from past games such as saving friends from their demise (Devil Survivor) and having a “Persona” twist to it. There is so much potential and near infinite possibilities given the past of the series.

A New Genre of Music by Shoji Meguro

Persona music is always unique and has a different theme depending on the game setting. Persona 3 had the rap vocals of Lotus Juice, Persona 4 had happy-pop feel good tracks, and Persona 5 introduced acid jazz. Depending on what the theme of Persona 6 will be, there is definitely potential for an entirely new genre of music to make its way. Shoji Meguro, the genius composer of the Persona games, is the master of mashing music genres to make unique and catchy soundtracks. Perhaps we could have a set composed of electronic dance music, rock/guitar, or maybe even a genre we aren’t familiar with. Whatever it is, Shoji won’t let us down. We will have jams for years to come.

New Mythology of the Personas

Although Personas are considered a part of ourselves, the designs are based on several heroes from various sources of literature and mythology. Persona 2 and 3 delved into Greek mythology, while Persona 5 featured famous literary thieves. So what’s next? For Persona 6, it would be different to see Egyptian mythology explored, especially given the amount of personas and demons who derive from that (like Anubis).  We also have other options, such as European, Asian, African, Arctic, and more. It also would be great to see Native American folklore explore or even spirit animals/”personas”. Again, it all depends on the theme, but there is a lot of potential regarding persona designs and unexplored mythologies.

More Events/Expanded Social Elements

Persona 5 really did a fantastic job with the social aspects of the game, allowing for even more time to get to know your teammates and confidants. However, in Persona 6, it would be nice to see more, especially after hitting rank 10. For example, maybe new scenes and dates can unlock after rank 10, which would make the social “link” last throughout the entire game. Also, even more events or even the addition of multiple events might make the experience somehow more immersive. For example, players could have the choice of going to the beach with some of the cast members, or checking out an alternate event the same day. There are many possibilities.

Characters that Break Out of The Common Tropes

Persona characters are always great and well done, which is one reason we love these games so much. However, that doesn’t stop Persona from relying on anime-ish tropes some of the time. Note: There’s nothing wrong with this, but it would be nice to see more diversity. Maybe we could see beyond the humorous “best friend” type or the typical arcana archetypes that we see in every game. It is hard to say this because the characters are already so well done despite being affiliated with certain tropes at times. However, having a more diverse cast from different backgrounds might be a good aspect to consider in the future.

Although Persona 5 was a masterpiece in many respects, there are many aspects to consider when making the next game in the series. There is a lot for Persona 6 to live up to, but ATLUS manages to pull together something even more refined and put together with every release. Adding same sex relationships, a female MC, elements from other games, a bigger world, and an older cast are all things that could make Persona 6 stand out. We may have to wait a while again, but it will be worth it.

the game is about how people like you are wrong and break most of taboos. and no one cares to your opinion

It’s ironic of how you say “no one cares” yet you also expressed your opinion in here. Hypcorite much ?

      Obvious troll.

  • kiyoi08

Tbh i disagree with the ideas the full year calendar, and a bigger world. I don’t think it’s neccesary.

  • JamesspeaksTRUTH

    God does not exist.

  • Vittorio Pugliese

You forgot to put “a speaking protagonist”

    • Shadowriver

You need to remember that this not just Persona but it is tradition across all SMT series, he suppose to be you, you give him a name and you talk by choosing answers, this is how main characters work in SMT games and i don’t think they gonna break it

      • Vittorio Pugliese

I want a protagonist to be a full character with her own character development (that’s right, i want a female protagonist, as it further drives the point that she’s not supposed to be a self-insert for the male audience but a character in her own right).
In order to do that, they should pull out a Drakengard 2/Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter-like plot twist and have a protagonist who isn’t silent (with other characters acknowledging the fact that she is a protagonist with her own personality) and another party member mute for plot-related reasons. She (not he) could be a Sun Arcana instead of Fool (with Moon being a split personality contained inside her) and she will meet the original Joker from Persona 5 in the form of the mascot character (because Joker sees his mute past self as non-human), thus inverting the Joker-Morgana relationship from P5) . The mute character is not the protagonist (named Ellie in the novel I’m writing), but the mascot, who is mute not only because it’s Joker, but also because it isn’t human (Akira Kurusu thinks of when he was forced to act as a player avatar as the as not being actually human). Those protagonists who had been silent in the past are explained to have been mute because they were born with the Wild Card and they had met Philemon (actually the player), who took control of their body and temporarily erased their personality. After getting the world arcana, those characters got a voice because they got a personality (Makoto Yuki never had a voice because he died).
For the social links, they should take example from Xenoblade (1, not X), or Trails of Cold Steel 2 (I’m not sure if he spoke in 1 or not, but Rean Schwarzer was shown talking like a normal character in 2, and yet he had Social Links). i don’t want those SL to be MY friends, I want them to be THE CHARACTER’S friends.
I desperately want something like that from Persona 6, and I want to actually see the protagonist’s character development! I don’t want it to be me, I want it to be a character in his own right, with an actual personality, however I think Atlus will never give me a hero with a personality, and they will also make Joker a mute in the 2018 anime and spin offs, like all the SMT protagonists (Makoto Yuki only said grunts, yes/no answers, Persona names and one line per movie in P3 adaptations; Minato Arisato said jackshit during the whole manga; Souji Seta’s only lines in the manga were grunts, Persona Names, Yes/No answers, “Mmmmmmmm” and “Why?” and a full dialogue in the ending, where he isn’t supposed to represent the player anymore; Yu Narukami in The Animation had a sprite that showed him moving his mouth but Yosuke no voice came out of it and Yosuke often spoke when the camera was zooming on Yu; and Yu in Arena was only voiced because the fans wanted Rise playable and so Rise couldn’t speak for Yu during story sequences). The only thing I can hope for is that Joker won’t appear at all in the P5 anime (replaced by Makoto Niijima or an adult Yu Narukami because Makoto is the actual P5 protagonist and due to an error Yu has become a fully voiced character) and at least Project Re Fantasy will have a full character as the protagonist.
I’m tired of mutes. Really. Sorry if I kept shoving it down your throat. I’m really sorry, but I want Atlus to see how much a hero with his own personality could improve the plot.

        • Shadowriver

But thats how SMT games works as i said ;p

          • Vittorio Pugliese

My ideas for P6 are being written in the form of a book, Persona X Rise of the NWO, where Ellie, the main protagonist, talks regularly (and cannot be made mute because she is acknowledged by the other characters as not being the player/reader’s avatar, so much that Akira Kurusu, her canon love interest, mentions that “she didn’t have to go through the trobule of being a silent player avatar like him, and this is why he loves her”), but Kuwagata, an anthropomorphic blue beetle, does not talk (his nickname is “Mime”, other characters refer to him as “having no personality” and every time Kuwagata has to talk, the narrator mentions that “he makes incomprehensible grunts” or that “some icons appear in front of Kuwagata, and he touches one of them”).

          • Vittorio Pugliese

And what do you personally think? Would you like some changes in the SMT formula?

          • Shadowriver

Well many thing, don’t copy P4 because some things in P5 feel like plain replacement from P4, more impactful choses not being too obviuous like in SMT, better negotiations because they feel quite limited compired to what SMT has to offer, make more social link character that are impotent to plot insted of being them trasparent characters that only say thank you at the end, maybe something that impact the story depending on how you level them. Thats things on top of my head. I would don’t mind female choose or even female main character overall, but i know there issues and risks related to that.

There few things that Atlus definitly won’t change, mute character this is core of SMT and most likely won’t change, school being a joint of the cast (there even tradition that schools logo in persona reassable car brands) and visual novel part, social links this is what made Persona games popular in first place over mainline SMT and Igor, his assitent and Velvet Room. Those are things that makes Persona a Persona and htey less likely to change

          • Vittorio Pugliese

I’ve never been a fan of silent protagonists. This is why I never got into Megaten.

          • Shadowriver

Oh i just remind myself of something :o They did something like what you wanted in SMT4 Final/Apocalypse, which is kind of side story game where you are different protag and original protag from SMT4 is actually talking character, but he is kind of end up being cheesy, but if you think about it by your actions in SMT4 you been like this xd

          • Vittorio Pugliese

No, because Nanashi (the new protagonist) is silent. A Drakengard 2-like twist is that the new protagonist is a talking character, while the protagonist of the previous game returns mute for plot reasons. If it was like that, then Nanashi would have had his own personality and voice, while Flynn would have still been mute and his mutism disorder would have been explained with plot reasons. What I want is something like Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter or Drakengard 2.

          • Shadowriver

oh you want it this way ;p well it only proves my point that they want character voice to flow from yourself

          • Vittorio Pugliese

But, if it was only a spinoff (like Persona 5 Arena, persona 5-2 or Persona X instead of Persona 6), would you like something like Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter or Drakengard 2, where the new protagonist has a canon name and talks but a party member (the original Joker) is mute for plot reasons (and his mutism is recognized by the other character) and dialogue options are not for the new hero but for Joker?

          • Daniel Guerin

Oh well then they should change everything to fit Mr. Pugliese’s wants then! Your ideas fracking suck boyo.

          • Vittorio Pugliese

Why do they suck? A Persona spinoff where the main theme is “change” has to show that “change” with characters that break out from common character tropes in the series

          • Chronic

Because it just doesn’t make sense? Why are you so obsessed with having the other character be mute? If you really hated the silent protagonist that much why would want another non-talking character? It seems like you thought itd be a clever/funny idea writing some fan fiction once and now won’t let it go..

          • Vittorio Pugliese

I would prefer it if all the party members actually talked

          • Vittorio Pugliese

The concept of another character that can’t talk for plot reasons was just I wanted a Persona game where the protagonist is not the Fool and has his own personality, and you see the story unfold from the perspective of a character who can be developed, while the other mute character was meant to be the actual Fool. Since Fool Arcana means bein mute and lackin of personality in the Persona series, then the next game’s theme would be ho

          • Vittorio Pugliese

If it were for me, then I would ditch the silent protagonist entirely and have a main character with a personality and his own character development.

          • Vittorio Pugliese

As for tge P5 anime, I can’t wait for Ren to actually speak and have a personality. The problem? Atlus is Atlus, and they’ll find any bullshit excuse to keep Ren mute

          • Vittorio Pugliese

The concept of that non-talking character is explicitly to show what Ren Amamiya really is (a static, perfect and emotionless being), and how would it suck to be a Fool Arcana

          • Chronic

            That sounds so stupid.

          • Vittorio Pugliese

In my opinion a character with a personality like Fei Fong Wong or Cloud Strife is always better than a mute like Crono or Megaten protagonists, unless they’re completely user-created (a la Dark Soul/Skyrim), but Joker is not completely user created, so, if he isn’t supposed to be mute for plot reasons, having Joker silent feels like a waste in my opinion.

          • Vittorio Pugliese

And a new Persona where character break the common tropes would be awesome, and, because the silent protagonist is a tradition in Megaten, having a Persona RPG (not a numbered chapter and probably more like a traditiona JRPG) where that trope is broken would be cool! As I expained before, I’m tired of the classic Arcanas which repeat themselves (Magician for mascot, Chariot for best friend who ends up acting as the hero’s mouthpiece, Lovers for the love interest, Emperor for the bully, Priestess for the shy girl, etc, and that also includes Fool for the mute hero, which I would like to ditch for a full game. I would probably like a Sun Arcana female heroine or a Death Arcana professional soldier who is already married)

          • Vittorio Pugliese

Another twist I would like is that you play a mute in the present/social links, but you aren’t the actual hero. The real plot is told to you by the Velvet Room assistant and in the real plot you play as different characters all of which have a personality.

          • Vittorio Pugliese

And what do you think about the idea of P5’s anime not being about Joker but about an adult Yu Narukami?

          • Shadowriver

Wont happen as it’s gonna be adaptation of the Persona 5 as the rest of Persona animes. But i would not mind about adult Yu Narukami adult anime quastion why they would do that and if story would be interesting ;p and again i don’t mind Joker talking in adaptation either

          • Chronic

Maybe changes. But none of your ideas, they’re horrible. Your fan fiction is straight garbage.

        • Shadowriver

But im not againts main character to have voice in anime, Joker had voice in promotional materials if you didnt notice :)

          • Vittorio Pugliese

I know that, and changing that trope is part of the themes I want for P6. I want P6 (or Persona X) to be about the themes of “real war”, “imperialism”, “nationalism”, “corruption”, “desertion”, “science” “overcoming imperfection with technology”, “rejecting the goal you were created for” and especially “being someone else”.
Because SMT’s tradition is that the protagonist is a self-insert for the player that, in order to perfectly embody the themes of “being imperfect”, “rejecting the goal he was created for” and “being someone else”, the P6 protagonist needs to be a character by himself instead of a player insert (and there will be a party member, either Joker from P5, the hero’s best friend or the mascot character, who is an actual mute for plot reasons). The protagonist will be a non-Fool Arcana (as being a Fool means “your avatar”, so, in order to make a hero that is someone else he needs to be another Arcana) the other party members need Arcanas that aren’t common (Fool for the party member that is actually mute, other members of Hierophant, Hermit, Hanged, Death, Temperance, Devil, Tower, Star, Moon or Sun Arcana).
The main character doesn’t need to be voiced only in the anime, but IN THE MAIN GAME. P6 MUST GIVE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT TO THE PROTAGONIST. InN P6 THE MAIN CHARACTER WON’T BE YOU, BUT SOMEONE ELSE, BECAUSE THAT WILL BE A MAJOR THEME OF THE GAME.
What do you think about that?

          • Vittorio Pugliese

But I think Atlus will find a way to incorporate Joker’s mutism in the story. I hope Joker will talk in the anime, but I don’t think he will.
At least I can still hope Yu Narukami will replace Joker in the anime, or that the anime will actually be about Makoto Niijima.

          • Vittorio Pugliese

As for PQ2, I hope they will handle it differently than PQ. In PQ the character you chose had no dialogue because he’s supposed to represent you, while the other talks rgularly. For PQ2 I want to change the formula by making Makoto Yuki always mute regardless of your choice and Yu Narukami always voiced, even if you want to play from his perspective. As for Joker, I want him voiced too, but I don’t know how the anime will handle him (I believe Atlus will keep him mute, like they did with Makoto Yuki). This could be a nice compromise between those who want the protagonist not to have a personality and those who want it to have one, as those who want to play as themselves could play as the mute character, while those who want to play as an estabilished character could play as the other two. What do you think?

Good thing he sent Jesus to save us and teach us to spread the message of God’s love and grace then or I’d be in deep doo-doo.

There was already same sex relationship on persona 2.

  • insanereality09

As you can see the persona series follow a certain color like p4 with yellow and p5 with red like there is a heavy presence of these colors in the game like red is everywhere in p5 i think the next in the game series should be green because that is the next color avaliable other than blue p3 yellow p4 and green p5 so p6 should be green
I think the next game should take place in rural japan like in summer with lots of trees and greenery like a small town in rural japan i know p4 did that but technology was present in it and it took a very darkk tone
i think p6 should have a more upbeat setting like a small town in summer and the personas should be based on youkai

  • Daniel Guerin

Just tired of SJW morons trying to pigeonhole their agenda into games. If you want games with same sex relationships, make them yourselves.
