Splatoon 2 Nintendo Direct: Detailed Update

Nintendo’s most recent Nintendo Direct was entirely about Splatoon 2, a game that will release on the Switch come July 21, 2017. Literally weeks away, Nintendo has revealed new details about the game that makes it a lot closer to online multiplayers like For Honor or Overwatch than ever before.

Gear Abilities

What you wear matters now! You can buy various clothing items with in-game money and each will give you a small boost during your battles. These boosts include: reducing ink consumption, increase movement speed, and decrease respawn time.

Ranked Battles

Brand new modes are available in Splatoon 2 including Ranked Battles, where you can essentially level up your character through a variety of challenges. These challenges are Splat Zones, Tower Control, and Rainmaker. Splat Zones is where you fight for control over specific areas the game places on the map. In Tower Control you defend a moving tower that makes checkpoint stops now and then. Rainmaker is the most chaotic, a capture the flag mode where the flag is a weapon you can use. The Ranked Battle modes rotate every two hours, just in case you’re not keen on a particular one.

Single-Player Mode

There’s even a little story to go along with it! You must rescue Callie, a member of the Squid Sisters band, from the evil Octarians. This is a mix between a platformer and practice for the various battle modes you can play online. It’s a great place to try out those new gear abilities, and all the new weapons Nintendo announced as well.

New Weapons and Special Abilities

Some of the new weapons announced today include Clash Blaster, Flingza Roller, Goo Tuber, and the Dapple Dualies, and the post launch update that will include Brella. Brella is an umbrella-shaped shield you can use in battle. It’s better to see them action, however, so watch the video to see what they really can do. Some of the special abilities you can use include the Autobomb and Toxic Mist. The Autobomb is essentially a heat seeking missile of paint. Toxic Mist fills the surrounding area with a poisonous mist, reducing the ink of your enemies, as well as making them move slower. Other special abilities, which Nintendo calls Special Weapons, include Tenta Missiles, the Inkjet, the Sting Ray, and the Baller. These can only be used when you special meter is full.

Nintendo Switch Online – SplatNet 2

When the game launches on July 21, 2017, SplatNet 2 will also be available for download. This is an app that is only available if you are subscribed to the Nintendo Switch Online service. SplatNet 2 is an app that will allow players to stay in touch with each other and the goings on of the game world, including stage schedules, gear, stats, lifetime inkage compared to real world places, host Private Battles, League Battles, Salmon Run, and Splatfest Battles. There’s even a voice chat feature that allows you to communicate directly with your online friends.

In addition to all of this, Nintendo promised two full years of content updates for Splatoon 2. I wonder what will happen when those two years are done, but for now the hype is supposed to be on. There’s a demo coming out July 15, 2017, just in case you weren’t already totally sure you wanted to buy the game.
