Kingdom Hearts 3 Trailer Confirms Toy Story World

Disney and Square Enix have revealed the official trailer for Kingdom Hearts III at the D23 Expo this year and we finally get to see what the developers were up to all this time. The trailer features quite a bit of gameplay, though the game is still in development and the footage is very much subject to change. We get to see some familiar combat, along with some brand new moves from special Keyblades we haven’t seen before, including an exciting looking hammer that evolves into a rocket.

Of course, Kingdom Hearts isn’t all about combat, Sora, Donald Duck, and Goofy get to meet some new friends. These fast allies come in the form of Toy Story‘s Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Hamm, Rex, and green soldier set Andy must be so proud of. I must say, it’s a little weird to hear these characters speak Japanese and in completely different voices. Tom Hanks (who voice acted for Woody) and Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear) have very iconic and beloved voices, so hopefully they will return for the English version.

It seems that Woody and those listed are the only ones of Andy’s toys to be left after the Heartless appeared. Thus, with the help of Sora and company, they go on a mission to rescue their friends from Galaxy Toys. Likely an evil place of evil toys, where Sora can do the Titanfall 2 thing and jump into a mech suit to gun down powerful enemies.

According to the director of the Kingdom Hearts series Tetsuya Nomura “fans have been anticipating the inclusion of this world for many years” and they are happy to finally give the fans this gift. Nomura explains that Kingdom Hearts III will have an entirely original story and gameplay will stay true to the “Toy Story style and aesthetic.” The new game will mirror the quality of “every Pixar film” and “undoubtedly be an experience that fans will not want to miss.”

Quite the change from previous games, where the graphics did not quite match the quality of the movies they were emulating. Does this change the series lore too much or is it a perfect fit? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Kingdom Hearts III will be available for the Xbox One, and the PS4 in 2018.
