After the cinematic trailer yesterday, THQ Nordic and developer Experiment 101 have released a gameplay trailer for BioMutant.
The trailer, and some details from a press release, reveal that BioMutant is a “post-apocalyptic open-world action RPG.” The “action” element includes real-time combat, the style depending on the player’s choice of mutations (not to be confused with the mutagens from Witcher), bionics, and crafting skills.
You can focus on melee, automatic weapons, mutant ability actions, or all three. You can mix it up as much as you like, in fact the developers encourage it. If you want to stick to hand-to-hand combat and then shoot your way through the next fight, go for it. All of these abilities are dependent on the mutations you choose. The mutations, according to THQ Nordic, also influence the way your character looks. You can also craft your weapons of your choice, be they single or doubled handed blades, and melee weapons that can crush, smash, or pierce.
As to the story itself, BioMutant will have three worlds to explore, including “an underworld and a small solar system.” The third was not explicitly mentioned, but the worlds are “systematically generated.” As mentioned before, your method of travel ranges from on foot, mech, air-balloon, jetski, UFO, and as seen in the trailer, a mechanical hand. That shoots for you like a cannon – can it get any cooler?
BioMutant will also let you create your own story, as the game features “a contextual storyteller.” If you don’t know exactly how that would work, think of Bastion. When you did something unsavoury, unskillful, or stood around too long doing nothing, the narrator would react and say something generally witty. It continued the story in its own way and succeeded at immersing the player within the game.
Within BioMutant, THQ Nordic explains that the Tree of Life in the game is “bleeding death from its roots” and “ruining the land” with a plague. But the tribes of the world are divided, they need someone strong to unite them to “bring them all down.”
BioMutant will be coming to the PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2018. If you’re interested, there’s a collectors edition for $119 USD that includes the game, official soundtrack, an as yet unrevealed figurine, artwork, and a premium box.
