Forza Motorsport 7

https://youtu.be/Dokpy_KIuyA

Release Date: October 3rd
Systems: PC, Xbox One
Developer: Turn 10 Studios
Publisher: Microsoft Studios

Releasing nearly two years after Forza Motorsport 6, Forza Motorsport 7 hopes to continue the uptrend of the series set by its predecessor. The Forza Motorsport series has been overshadowed of late by its Forza Horizon sibling, but both typically bring a quality racing to the Xbox and Windows 10.

This year though, Microsoft is upping the ante for the series by bringing the racing sim to the soon to be released Xbox One X. On it, you can expect the game to run natively at 60 frames per second at 4K resolution. There’s no doubt that it’s going to be gorgeous. And there’s plenty of eye candy packed into the game to drool over. Forza Motorsports 7 features over 700+ cars and 30+ environments to experience.

This year also rolls out the game’s new campaign mode, Forza Driver’s Cup. It’s a “reimagined” campaign that allows the player to progress through their career as they see fit on their way to six different championships. 2017 is a big year for the series, and could be a major display piece for what the Xbox One X can do.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions

Release Date: October 6th
Systems: Nintendo 3DS
Developer: Alpha Dream
Publisher: Nintendo

Released in 2003, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga was absolutely adored when it came out for the Gameboy Advance. That was 14 years ago. So Nintendo figured it was time to bring the title out of retirement and announced during their E3 Treehouse that a remake was on the way.

This wasn’t just a quick port with updated graphics befitting the 3DS though. They added + Bowser’s Minions to the title for a reason. Not only does the core game remain intact, but there’s a new story mode within the RPG that puts you in the role of one of Bowser’s Goomba’s – Captain Goomba to be exact.

The same sprite based graphics remain – albeit looking better. And additional lighting and effects were implemented to bring the game up to 3DS standards. But the same Mario & Luigi RPG that you fell in love with all those years ago is still at the heart of this offering. With additional amiibo functions to help you along your quest as well.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War

Release Date: October 10th
Systems: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Developer: Monolith Productions
Publisher:  Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment

Talion and his spirit buddy Celebrimbor are back. And apparently Sauron is too. Celebrimbor has crafted a new Ring of Power. One he believes could be used to become a powerful king as opposed to a Dark Lord. And Talion has reluctantly decided to aid him on his quest.

Enough about plot though. What’s new with the Nemesis system? A lot actually. Middle-earth: Shadow of War expands the Nemesis system to feature a much larger portion of the overall game world. Certain characters within the rankings can now be Followers. Which, depending on how you initially interact with them, can be used to aid you in your efforts within the game’s narrative.

Multiplayer is now set to include a Social Conquest mode. In it, you’ll invade fortresses owned by your friends in an effort to overthrow and conquer them for your own. You can do this in either a friendly or ranked setting. There’s a lot to be excited about with the seemingly under the radar Middle-earth: Shadow of War.

The Evil Within 2

Release Date: October 13th
Systems:        PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Developer:      Tango Gameworks
Publisher:       Bethesda Softworks

A direct sequel to 2014’s The Evil Within, The Evil Within 2 puts you back into the role of Detective Sebastian Castellanos. He’s been fired from the police department for sticking by story revolving around the absurd happenings of the first game. He slips into an alcoholic depression that takes over his life for three years. Until his former partner returns to inform Castellanos that his daughter isn’t actually did. She’s been abducted by Mobius Corporation. Game on.

As far as gameplay goes, The Evil Within 2 obviously sticks with the survival horror elements that made the first outing a success. Maps are larger though, and the game features multiple different ways to accomplish each level. Players can utilize weapons or stealth to make their way through the game. They’ll be aided along by a crafting system to garner themselves more items and ammunition.

ELEX

Release Date: October 17th
Systems: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Developer: Piranha Bytes
Publisher: THQ Nordic

As a brand new IP, we don’t know what to expect from ELEX. But it certainly looks cool. THQ Nordic describes the sci-fi action RPG as “edgy, dark, uncompromising, and complex.” The game’s story revolves around the titular ELEX. It’s a element within the planet Magalan that has the world divided. It imbues people with magic like abilities. While some want to use it for good, there are others of course that don’t.

The world is mix between sci-fi settings and more medieval ones. Players will have the ability to wield a wide array of weapons, including guns, swords and magic. The developers even teased that there will be a jet pack accessible at some point in the game as to make exploration easier throughout the world. All in all, it sounds pretty fun. We’ll have to wait just a few more weeks to find out for ourselves.

Gran Turismo Sport

Release Date: October 17th
Systems: PlayStation 4
Developer: Polyphony Digital
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment

The other of the two “iconic racing franchises” teased in our open, Gran Turismo Sport is the first in the series to hit the track since 2013’s Gran Turismo 6. It’s also the first GT title to hit the PlayStation 4 family of consoles. And while the series still certainly holds pedigree, it’s not what it used to be. GT6 on PlayStation 3 sold a little over 5 million copies. While GT3 on PlayStation 2 sold nearly a whopping 15 million. However the install bases on PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 were dramatically different.

Gran Turismo Sport brings the focus down to the what’s in the title this time – Sport. There’s 177 cars in this outing and 27 configurations of 19 core tracks. Also for the first time in a Gran Turismo game will be Porsche vehicles, as EA lost exclusive rights to their brand shortly ago. And what better time to include Porsche when Sport is in your title?

The game’s core modes of Campaign, Sports and Arcade all remain intact and have offerings as expected. All of which can be enjoyed via PlayStation VR this time around. Gran Turismo 7 also plans to offer the Gran Turismo World Championship as an online eSports event this go around, with the hopes of having the title officially ratified by the World Motorsport Council. That could be a huge draw for the competitive racing scene, but we’ll have to wait and see on that one.

Well, there certainly appears to be a lot going down on October 17th. And last, but certainly not least, welcome WWE 2K18 to the ring. And it’s going to be a crowded ring this go around. Because for the first time since 2002’s WWF SmackDown! Just Bring It on PlayStation 2, you can have up to 8 wrestlers in the ring at once (6 on the Nintendo Switch). That’s one hell of a Royal Rumble – because that mode too has been reworked. The Royal Rumble mode now features new gameplay mechanics, finishing moves and elimination animations.

Destiny 2

Okay, yeah. Destiny 2 technically came out in September. And it was kind of a big deal. However, if you’re a PC player – not so much. PC players had to sit and wait a month while the consoles players hogged all the glory. In October though, it’s their time to shine.

And by all accounts, PC players have a great game coming their way next month. Destiny 2 is averaging scores in the range of 85 according to Metacritic. And with some of the added benefits that come to playing the game on PC, the wait should definitely be worth it.

Assassin’s Creed: Origins

Release Date: October 27th
Systems: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Publisher: Ubisoft

The Assassin’s Creed series is back after what feels like a long hiatus. Which is what happens when you take a year off from a typically annualized franchise. And according to those that have gone hands on with the Origins, the extra year of development time appears to have paid dividends.

Assassin’s Creed: Origins pits us in the earliest days of the series’ timeline. As Bayek, the fight for your people in Ptolemaic Egypt leads you to create the Secret Order of the Assassins. Thus putting the rest of the franchise’s story into motion. There are a lot of differences this time around too. You’ll be able to control certain animal companions this go around. So instead of reaching a high vantage point to map your terrain with Eagle Vision, you’ll instead do it with an actual eagle.

The combat system has been reworked and naval combat returns in Origins. As does the tomb raiding aspect of the series which fits in quite nicely with its Egyptian setting. We’ll know for sure in about a month, but Assassin’s Creed: Origins might just be the breath of fresh air the series has needed for quite some time now.

Super Mario Odyssey

Release Date: October 27th
Systems: Nintendo Switch
Developer: Nintendo EPD
Publisher: Nintendo

“Here we go!” A fully fledged console The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario game in one year. Can you believe it? The Nintendo Switch is certainly riding high right now, and Super Mario Odyssey is only going to promote it further.

This is Mario’s return to form in a sandbox open-world setting. The game is promising at least 11 unique game worlds. All of which are riddled with Power Moons to find and collect. Zelda changed the series forever with its vast open-world and addicting Shrine finding gameplay. Mario appears to be trying to do the same with the sheer amount of content and surprises hidden within each one of his worlds.

The Capture mechanic can’t go without mention. And with each new trailer we get to see how far Nintendo has pushed it. Using Mario’s new pal, Cappy, he can possess a multitude of items and enemies throughout the game’s many worlds. Each of which is likely to lead you to a hidden Power Moon right around the corner.

While Nintendo is a favorite in the Game of the Year race with Breath of the Wild, the famed publisher just might have another contender in the category with Super Mario Odyssey.
