A recent gameplay video from Polygon shows us the combat of Extinction in more detail. For one, giant ogres won’t be the only ones the main character (Avil) takes down. These ogres (called Ravini) come after smaller minions.
These creatures terrorize the poor village folk until you get rid of them. With that done, you can use the main character’s magical powers to send the villagers to safety, away from the battle.
You won’t be able to get the job before the Ravini arrive, so it’s up to the player to prioritize and do what is necessary. The Ravini, as we’ve seen in previous trailers, come in a variety of armor.
This prevents you from using your rune ability to hack off limbs and heads. Sometimes you just need to hit the armor often enough, sometimes you can get the Ravini to knock it off themselves while trying to get at you.
If you die or wait too long, the limbs you’ve hacked off will grow back. As such, timing is just as important as not getting hit too often. Unfortunately, the combat seems a little less complicated than some might have been hoping. To compensate, there is plenty of bouncing on roofs and flying from building to building.
Combat isn’t the end of it either, Extinction is also claims a deep story campaign. According to the game’s website, the world of Extinction has been at war for generations. If it isn’t the Ravini coming to kill everyone, humans are fighting over land and riches.
That said, “only those trained in the ways of the ancient order” can kill the Ravini, and you’re one of the only ones left. There are also plenty of side quests to do as well, though no details have been provided yet.
Extinction comes out early 2018 on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
