Nintendo Direct: Animal Crossing
Animal Crossing on mobile has been a long time coming for fans of the series.
Nintendo has announced today that there will be a Nintendo Direct tomorrow, October 24, 2017 at 8pm PT. It will be 15 minutes long and focused entirely on the upcoming mobile version of Animal Crossing. There will be no allusion whatsoever to other mobile titles, the Nintendo Switch, or 3DS.
Animal Crossing on mobile has been a long time coming for fans of the series. It was announced back in 2016 and we all thought it was going to be the first mobile title for Nintendo. Then out popped Super Mario Run and Fire Emblem Heroes. Though Super Mario Run does not have much in the way of micro-transactions, I think we can expect more coming with Animal Crossing.
It is, unfortunately, a game design that lends itself easily to the workings of micro-transactions. Not just with specific tiers of in-game currency that are increasingly difficult to acquire, but also with items that maybe unattainable via gameplay.
Or at least so difficult that it might as well be a paywall for things like new characters, animals, plants, land, certain buildings, the list goes on. Things fans probably took for granted in the original games might become rare commodities in the mobile game.
All of this very much depends on how Nintendo will handle micro-transactions. We don’t know how they will for sure yet, as their previous games do not feature them directly. If done correctly, Animal Crossing on mobile might just be the best thing since Super Mario Run.
Though games like Sims have existed on mobile and Facebook for years, Animal Crossing is a title that is sure to bring even more people to the mobile gaming market. In addition, there is nothing quite like the cute characters of Animal Crossing and the various adventures you can go on with them.
