In celebration of Mega Man‘s 30th anniversary, Capcom has decided to finally announce a new title for the Mega Man series, Mega Man 11. For those that are fans of the series, it has probably been way too long. Mighty No. 9 broke a lot of hearts when it came out, and a good Mega Man game has been a long time coming. And, thanks to the Mega Man 11 announcement trailer below, we know that this one looks like it has a bit of a visual upgrade.
Capcom describes Mega Man 11 as a “tight side-scrolling action” game with “completely hand-drawn characters and environments.” The story is the same, of course, as it is always Mega Man’s mission to defeat Dr. Wily and all his Robot Master bosses. The enemy design is apparently “unique” and the gameplay “ever-evolving.”
3D Mega Man on a 2D background and it’s called 2.5D by Capcom. This is fine, it looks fine, it is absolutely fine… It’s a little weird. If you’re used to Mega Man in all his pixelated 2D glory, Mega Man 11 might seem somewhat off the mark. As someone who plays indie games far too often, the graphics compare to a very well done indie title. Something clean like Hob or even Rime, only as a platformer.
That said, it’s going to be the gameplay that matter more than anything else in a Mega Man game. Graphics are the least of the problem, especially since it seems like they really did capture the heart of the older versions with the art style and design of each level and the bright colors of the enemies.
Mega Man 11 will be coming out late 2018 on the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
In addition to Mega Man 11, Mega Man Legacy Collection 1 and 2 are also coming to the Switch in the spring of 2018. If you don’t have a Switch, never fear, the Mega Man X series is coming in the summer of 2018 to the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
