At PSX 2017 on the weekend, a brand new Shadow of the Colossus trailer for the PS4 and PS4 Pro was revealed. The trailer shows off the many improvements to the game’s animations and environment from the PS2, to the PS3, to the PS4.
The jump to PS4 Pro is the largest one, of course, showing just how much more detail there is to be seen that was never there before. Less blobs, more detailed cliff faces, and more dynamic colossi.
I know we’re supposed to be looking at the pretty backgrounds and major updates to the colossi themselves, but Wander has also greatly improved (improved, but not perfect). He’s not up to modern standards by any means and certainly doesn’t match the detail put into the backgrounds, but he’s getting there.
A great deal of the character’s movement animation has been cleaned up. His cape no longer glitches in an unknown wind, his legs are in the way far less often. That said, we don’t get to see Wander’s run or walk cycle so there isn’t much guarantee yet on those legs looking a little more human. We do see Wander’s climbing, however, which is improved from the PS3 version, a lot less flopping and weird physics.
Besides Wander, we have the sweeping backgrounds and colossi the game is so famous for. The detail shown for the PS4 Pro is mind-blowing. It’s like someone turned down the brightness and upped the contrast to reveal details and depth of field that was not there before. The stone on the colossi’s back is more detailed with ruins and smoother texture. Their fur is a lot more alive and makes more physical sense in that ever-present unknown wind.
Shadow of the Colossus comes to the PS4 come February 6, 2018. You can pre-order now for $39.99 USD. There are no special editions or packages that come with the pre-order, so keep that in mind if you’re not into the price point.
