Epic Games is having, well, Epic success with Fortnite. The developer has announced some new statistics regarding its player base, and they’re quite impressive.
While Epic wouldn’t go into details regarding how the numbers are spread out, the developer is touting that there have been 40 million people who have played the game. How many of those 40 million actually put funds into Epic’s pocket is anyone’s guess though.
In the video above, Epic states that in the first 100 days of the game’s Battle Royale mode, Fortnite saw 5,686,564,003 gliders deployed, 31,628,287,976 pieces of construction material used, 573,349,974,226 shots fired, and 125,795,212 total matches won. Those are some big numbers.
For those unaware, Fortnite consists of two modes. Save the World is what the game originally launched with. It’s a premium game that contains a narrative with continual updates. Battle Royale launched just over 100 days ago completely free of charge. Inspired heavily by PUBG, it’s Battle Royale that has been taking the world by storm.
Within Battle Royale is the option to purchase the game’s season pass for $9.99. While I’m sure the majority of players just continue to play Fortnite Battle Royale completely free, Epic only needs a percentage of those 40 million players to purchase a season pass to earn themselves some serious cash.
Big changes are coming to the game this week too. A major evolution of the map will officially launch within a matter of days. With it comes radical changes to the landscape, specifically the western portion of the island. New cities, towns, mines and other landmarks are all being constructed. It will completely change the game’s meta for the time being.
While some outlets are reporting that Epic has stated that “vehicles” won’t be a thing in Fortnite, those comments could be taken out of context. Epic continues to have an absolutely incredible relationship with its online fan base. They communicate constantly. Just today, EpicEricSW stated the following on Reddit:
“Well, never say never.
To clarify (because part of that article might be taken out of context). We don’t think there’s a need for vehicles with the sole purpose of traversal. However, there are plenty of vehicles that could provide unique/hilarious functionality aside from fast movement.
No specific plans to share at this point, though :-)”
It’s been suggested in the past that Epic has toyed with the ideal of implementing vehicles with a purpose into the game. A bulldozer of sorts that could help to take down buildings and structures was theoretically discussed at one point. But as Eric said above, Epic has nothing official to share at this point.
