Soulcalibur 6 debuted at The Game Awards a little over a month ago. It was a huge unveiling for fans of the iconic franchise, but little was shown. Today, Bandai Namco has gifted us a new Japanese trailer that adds four more characters to the fighter’s roster.
During the footage that was aired during The Game Awards, only two characters were shown off. They were series staples Mitsurugi and Sophitia. Bandai Namco confirmed today that a few more series mainstays are being included this time as well.
The trailer begins with the reveal of a newcomer entering the series – Groh. After showcasing some of the rookie’s moves, we then move onto a series mainstay in Nightmare.
According to Bandai Namco, Soulcalibur VI is supposed to be a retelling of the plot of the original Soulcalibur. So it’s curious how Groh will fit into the overall narrative. Also, in the original game, Nightmare was essentially a reskin of one of Soulcalibur’s main characters, Siegfried Schtauffen. However, much like in later games, Nightmare appears to be his own character once again in Soulcalibur VI.
Following Nightmare, we get the reintroduction of Chai Xianghua. Xianghua is another original members of the series. After a montage of her dominating Sophitia runs, we then get a glimpse of our fourth confirmed returning character and ally to Xianghua in Kilik.
Trained in the art of staff fighting, Kilik does a number on Mitsurugi in today’s footage. After the beating concludes, the Soulcalibur VI title card lands, but then cuts away and back to Kilik. We then see Kilik’s corruption from Soul Edge, and the beginning of the events that unfold within the original Soulcalibur story.
Bandai Namco states that Soulcalibur 6 will be heavily focused on the franchise’s plot. The game is planning to launch worldwide this year for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
