Paramount Pictures has revealed another trailer for the upcoming sci-fi film, Annihilation. There is some more footage from the movie as well as narration from the stars of the film, including Natalie Portman who plays the main character Lena, Jennifer Jason Leigh as Dr. Ventress, Tessa Thompson as Josie Radek, Tuva Novotny as Cass Sheppard, and Gina Rodriguez as Anya Thorensen.
Together, they make up a team of scientists that are determined to figure out what the Shimmer is, discover the fate of previously sent in teams, and possibly how to stop it.
The film premieres February 23, 2018 in both theaters and on Netflix, one of the first films to be marketed this way. Annihilation is a film based on a books series titled Southern Reach by Jeff VanderMeer.
There are three books in the series, all are accounts of the Shimmer and events relating to it. Depending on how Annihilation goes, it is likely that the movies will take after the books and be a series as well.
Interestingly, the books never name the main character (played by Natalie Portman), but the movie does. It is understandable since the books are written as a series of journal entries and the movie acts out those entries instead.
It is a challenge to write a main character without a name, especially in a movie where people speak to that character, but it is not impossible. For example, Quentin Tarantino managed it for his Kill Bill films. But again, the choice to name the character anyway is understandable, sometimes getting around saying a name is more effort than it is worth.
Annihilation is written and directed by Alex Garland, known for his work on Ex Machina (another well-written film) and 28 Days Later. According to Garland, Annihilation is “something we haven’t seen quite yet.” Hopefully, he is right and we will have another great sci-fi movie to make history.
