For the first time in 20 years, HBO has put out a Super Bowl ad for one of their shows, Westworld. This trailer announces the première date of the second season as April 22 at 9pm EST. Directed by co-creator Jonathan Nolan, this trailer features a cover of Runaway by Kanye West by Ramin Djawadi. He composed the soundtrack to Westworld as well as HBO’s other headline show, Game of Thrones.
In The Big Moment segment following season 1, Nolan stated that season 2 of Westworld “is defined by chaos” and that we will “come to understand” what was a part of Ford’s “planning all along.”
Nolan’s wording regarding Ford’s plan is somewhat suspicious, as he states that “Ford has set in motion what he thinks is a plan.” One would expect that when referring to Ford, Nolan would show the same confidence the character would have in any of his actions, especially a plan as apparently elaborate as the one we see here.
In the trailer, we see slow motion used tastefully to show us the slow destruction of the bulls running through glass walls and various mirrors. They run towards a few men, killing them quickly despite the shots being fired. Maeve Millay arrives just behind the bulls, walking gracefully through the destruction. She wears a look that spells murder for any that might get in her way.
Dolores Abernathy narrates the trailer, stating that “from the ashes” of Westworld they will “build a new world, our world.” This seems to imply that she not only leads other into her quest for independence but that she has already found it.
Fans of the show are sure to smell a big twist coming a mile away. Westworld is a show full of twists and the ending of season 1 could only be matched by Westworld’s second season.
