The worst kept secret in gaming is now official. Shadow of the Tomb Raider has been announced and is headed our way later this year.
Square Enix dropped the news this morning and included a trailer as well for our viewing pleasure. At only 20 seconds in length, it gives us very little on the third title in the series’ reboot. And what we did get were just quick snippets of CG footage not representative of any actual gameplay. A true teaser trailer you could say.
The trailer hits all the various Tomb Raider beats within those twenty seconds. It starts with Lara sprinting through a dense forest as if she’s being chased. And she likely is as the next cut features a shrouded man with a machine gun on the hunt.
We then see Croft scaling a huge cliff side, and then we glimpse her discovery of an underground tomb. Then comes the obligatory segment where Lara gets the shit kicked out of her as she goes violently tumbling down a steep slope.
The final image is of Lara staring across a vast landscape at what appears to be a looming Mayan temple of sorts. The sun above is about to initiate a solar eclipse on the temples below.
The solar eclipse looks to be a catalyst for the events within Shadow of the Tomb Raider. “Shadow” being in the title of the game is evidence, for one. And the logo for the upcoming game features an eclipse in the spot of the “o” of Tomb Raider.
Square Enix is going to begin their marketing push for “Lara Croft’s defining moment” next month. On April 27th, the game will be shown off by the developers properly across what they are calling “three exclusive reveal events.”
Following that, we won’t have all that long to wait. Shadow of the Tomb Raider will release simultaneously across the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on September 14th.
