Hi-Rez Studios threw their hat into the battle royale ring back in January when they announced that Paladins would be implementing a new mode. Three months later we have some fresh details, as well as an entirely new name for the game – Realm Royale.
On February 22nd Hi-Rez stated that the studio would be separating what they were then calling Paladins Battlegrounds from the base game of Paladins itself. “We think that the things that are necessary to make Paladins Battlegrounds great and amazing are in conflict with the things that will make the OG version of Paladins that we all know and love great,” the developers said. Shortly after that statement was released, Battlegrounds was shut down.
True to their word, the game is back following “aggressive changes”. And with the announcement of Realm Royale as an entirely separate client, closed alpha codes are beginning to circulate to those who have signed up. Hi-Rez’s President, Stewart Chisam, tweeted out a link inviting those interested to enlist:

With the build currently being an alpha, testers are prohibited from sharing videos or images from the revamped battle royale title online. But Hi-Rez did publish a couple of screenshots themselves to give us a sneak peek.
The game certainly carries a Fortnite feel to it. Which I suppose is natural considering the two titles share similar art styles. A major difference between the two though is the incorporation of weapon crafting within Realm Royale.
As you run through the map and acquire weapons, armor and abilities, you’ll have the option to dismantle those items in return for Shards. Once you have at least 100 Shards, you can visit one of the many Forges on the map. There, you can drop your Shards and after two minutes, those Shards will be converted into a random Legendary weapon or ability.
This is the only way to acquire Legendary weapons within Realm Royale. So it’s a key strategic element to the game. Which also means that Forge locations are likely to be heavily trafficked and highly dangerous. Two minutes is a long time to wait.
