Nintendo Switch fans have been calling for the death of the 3DS and 2DS for a long time. It’s nothing malicious, they’re just tired of getting updates on it. “It’s Switch season Nintendo, get with the program!” So when the New Nintendo 2DS XL was released last year everyone collectively asked, why? It seemed so late in the 3DS family’s life cycle to have another model released but the install base of the 3DS can’t be denied. Nor is there any denying that the 3DS, and its iterations, will go down in history as one of the best handhelds ever.
So unsurprisingly the New 2DS XL, known as the New 2DS LL in Japan, is still going strong. Nintendo just announced they will be releasing brand new New 2DS XL models in Japan, one of which will also appear in Europe. The 3 new models are based on Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Mario Kart 7 and Minecraft: all heavy hitter franchises.
The New 2DS XL Animal Crossing: New Leaf Amiibo+ Pack releases on July 20th in Europe (pricing TBD) and July 19th in Japan for 15,980 yen. This one is definitely my favorite of the three. I’m curious as to how the material will feel as it has a really distinct fabric look to it. The indented leaf icon is also a really charming detail.
Next up, we have the New 2DS XL Mario Kart 7 Pack which also releases on July 19th for 15,980 yen. This one is clean cut but ultimately kind of dull. If I saw this outside of context I’m not even sure if I could identify the franchise.
More From Nerd Much?:
Lastly, the Minecraft New 2DS XL Creeper Edition releases August 2nd, and it will cost 16,980 yen. Minecraft isn’t my cup of tea but wow this is a really done handheld. Super distinct and a great staple in any collection.
