New Overwatch character announcements are always good. If recent rumors are to be believed, then we can expect a reveal during an upcoming animated short.
The rumor stems from a advert for a French cinema chain. They are screening Overwatch’s newest animated short on Monday, May 23. On this advertisement, they include the words, “discovery of new heroes.” At this point, it should be noted that the company has since explained the phrase as a typo. Whether of not that is the case, this is just the beginning of the rumor. Thanks to NeoGAF user Nirolak, we have a lot more evidence pointing towards a new character named Sombra. This evidence comes from many different aspects of the game, which adds to its credibility.
First off, Blizzard’s next animated short will take place on the Dorado map and focus on Soldier 76. In the map, there is a table with some files on it. Two of the files are for Soldier 76 a.k.a Jack Morrison. The third file in question is for Sombra. It is also mentioned that this wouldn’t be the first time a character has been teased in an existing map.
As more maps were released, images of a hooded figure began to appear. Occasionally, the image has been paired with the name Sombra. Additionally, her name comes up in Reaper’s dialogue. During battle he may say, “Where’s Sombra when you need her?” As Nirolak points out, this would imply that she is another villain. This would add to the already low number of villains in the cast.
There is additional evidence beyond that, but you can already tell that this rumor for a new Overwatch character is sounding more and more plausible. Still, you should take this with a grain of salt. Often times, assets might go unused in a game. Also, it can be very easy to string together “evidence” from a game to prove a single idea. However, we still encourage you to dream through the weekend. Monday is just around the corner.
