Torchlight Frontiers Announced with Trailer

The publisher Perfect World Entertainment announced today that a new studio has been formed in Echtra Games. But that’s not all, Perfect World also announced that Echtra is hard at work on the next iteration of the Torchlight series, Torchlight Frontiers.

The newly announced game will take place in the same universe of Torchlight and Torchlight 2. Torchlight Frontiers will be a “shared-world action-RPG” that will resemble the previous two games by bringing back many of series’ features and mechanics.

Max Schaefer, CEO of Echtra Games, released a statement saying the following:

“Evolving the Torchlight universe into a shared world has always been a goal for the franchise, and I’m excited that we’re finally able to make it a reality. Torchlight Frontiers will be a living, breathing universe that will still feel uniquely Torchlight, while we add our own creative spin to the game. The team is building something truly special, and we can’t wait for fans to play it”.

Max Schaefer heading Torchlight Frontier’s development at Echtra Games is noteworthy. Schaefer was the former Runic Games and Blizzard North cofounder. He’s worked on iconic games in the action RPG genre such as Diablo and the prior Torchlight games. Yoon Im, Senior Vice President of Publishing at Perfect World, lauded Echtra Games’ head. He said “Max has put together an all-star team of developers, and we continue to be amazed by the sheer level of talent and wealth of experience that they bring”.

Schaefer confirmed that Torchlight Frontiers will be making its first public appearances at both Gamescom and PAX West. At each convention an early playable demo will be available to experience at the Perfect World Entertainment booth.

Today’s info drop promises that Torchlight Frontiers “combines the heart of the beloved Torchlight series with a shared, persistent and dynamically generated world.” Echtra Games states “players will team up with friends and devoted pets to hack and slash their way through a vibrant world, discover ancient ruins of lost civilizations and brave dungeons filled with riches and dangerous creatures.”

No release window has been cited to this point. But Perfect World Entertainment did state that the game would be arriving for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
