Ashes of Creation: First Look at Action Combat Is Incredible
To anyone hardcore MMO enthusiast, the game Ashes of Creation by Intrepid Studios is already on your radar. It’s a game that has had our eyes for a couple of years not, and on the slate of upcoming MMORPGs, it’s probably the one we’re most excited about here at Nerd Much?.
It has been a couple of months since we last checked in with AoC, but yesterday, Intrepid Studios dropped a new video from Alpha One to their official YouTube (embedded above) centered on their action combat system, giving us our first look at it. And, simply put, it looks incredible.
There’s a lot to be excited about in the two and a half-minute video, even though it’s still in an alpha state. The first thing worth noting is that the game looks gorgeous, graphically-speaking. Sure, it’s an alpha, so we should expect tweaks and optimizations when it eventually launches. However, it’s worth pointing out that everything we’re seeing looks good, including spell animations, highly-detailed environments, and character design.
The second thing worth shining a light on is the fluid animation of movement during combat. Everything looks surprisingly smooth, despite the many different things going on all at once.
I’m wondering how framerate is going to hold up when there’s more than two players on a screen at once, which admittedly has us slightly concerned. If you’ve got multiple players slinging different types of spells at each other on a screen at once, and others using bows or swords, and you factor in all of the movement, I can’t imagine things running smoothly without seeing the visuals take a significant hit.
But what we’re seeing in the Ashes of Creation gameplay video does look pretty great, so that’s, at least, encouraging. Plus, the combat looks hella fun and a bit more high octane than we’re used to in an MMO. I’m slightly disappointed that we didn’t get a peak at the HUD or a spell drawer or anything like that so we can get a feel for what sort of control scheme we’re looking at when it comes to using action combat.
We’ll check back in with AoC again soon, but for now, check out the action combat gameplay in the video above. And if you want to read more about Ashes of Creation, check out our detailed list of upcoming MMOs.
