Windjammers 2 Announced, First Trailer
After a mere 24 years, the Windjammers series is getting a sequel, baby. The French development team of Dotemu have announced that Windjammers 2 is coming our way in 2019.
The first Windjammers released in Japanese arcades in February 1994. There’s been a revitalization of sorts lately though. A Windjammers remake came to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in August 2017. And Dotemu has announced that a Nintendo Switch version will be hitting the eShop on October 23rd.
Windjammers 2 looks to build upon the retro classic with “new stages and players, surprising and amazing new power moves and enhanced gameplay mechanics”. The game also sports 2D animations that are entirely hand drawn, making its aesthetics as unique as the gameplay itself.
If you haven’t heard of the developers before, Dotemu states that they are a studio “specializing in modern releases of beloved retro games.” With a mission statement that reads “give every gamer access to yesteryear’s classic video games on today’s platforms, including PC, mobile, console and more.” The team has been behind plenty of retro remakes, includes games within the Final Fantasy series, Metal Slug and Fatal Fury, and Heroes of Might and Magic.
Cyrille Imbert, CEO of Dotemu, explained where his passion originated from in regards to the upcoming sequel:
“Growing the Windjammers community over the past two years has been a lot of fun, and with that growth we see a great opportunity to continue to innovate on its timeless and fun gameplay. Thanks to that experience, we have a clear idea of how to make Windjammers 2 as fun and entertaining as the original.”
Dotemu has only confirmed that Nintendo Switch and PC versions of Windjammers 2 are on the way. It would be assumed that a PlayStation 4 version would be coming too at some point. The studio plans to bring Windjammers 2 to PAX West beginning August 31st in Seattle, Washington.
