The publisher Dotemu made news last week when they announced that Windjammers 2 was in development. Well, the team clearly wasn’t done with its nostalgic tactics as they’ve announced that Streets of Rage 4 is on the way as well.
Dotemu has assigned the development teams of Lizardcube and Guard Crush Games with making Streets of Rage 4 a reality. Today’s trailer confirms the return of an older Axel Stone within the game. He’s joined once again in the streets by Blaze Fielding.
The third playable character for most of the series, Adam Hunter, is M.I.A. to this point. Hunter isn’t featured on the game’s logo either, yet Stone and Fielding are. With Hunter’s absence, it’s looking like Streets of Rage 4 will max out with 2 player co-op. The developers have confirmed this, but they do state “gang up with a friend or clean up the city solo.” With “friend” being singular.
What Dotemu has said is that Streets of Rage 4 will sport hand drawn animated graphics. The game will play similarly to the 3 older titles, yet will incorporate new fighting mechanics as well. They also tout a “thumping soundtrack sure to get your blood pumping.”
The last time Streets of Rage had a new entry to the series was with 1994’s Streets of Rage 3 on the Sega Genesis. It reviewed fairly well, but it was essentially just more of the same for the beat ’em up series. We’ll have to see whether the 4th installment does anything radical to reenergize the franchise, but it’ll likely remain true to the formula established nearly 27 years ago.
Dotemu didn’t announce when the game would be releasing or on which consoles Streets of Rage 4 was being developed for. But it will likely arrive on the trio of consoles in the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
