Mortal Kombat 11 Story Trailer Explains the Fight for Time

NetherRealm Studios’ Mortal Kombat 11 is right around the corner. And with this being the 11th core installment, you might wonder what the hell we’re still fighting for. As it turns out, time itself. And all the major players begin taking sides within today’s Mortal Kombat 11 story trailer.

Within the Mortal Kombat 11 story trailer, we begin to see the series’ biggest conflict yet take form. The developers at NetherRealm explains the general plot, teasing “Raiden’s defeat of the evil Elder God, Shinnok, has drawn the ire of Kronika and upset her desired balance between good and evil. To restore stability in the realms, Kronika has only one option – rewind time to its beginning and restart history.”

It’s broken down within the Mortal Kombat 11 story trailer that the good side of the aforementioned balance is tasked with stealing Kronika’s Hourglass. Which is apparently the source of the time controlling goddess’ power.

It certainly won’t be that simple though. NetherRealm states that “Through the immersive story mode, different eras of the rich Mortal Kombat history collide as players take on the role of a variety of past and present characters who must join forces to defeat Shao Khan’s Outworld armies and solve the temporal crisis at stake.”

This also means that older iterations of characters will appear to take on the newer versions of themselves. This was teased within the game’s introductory trailer when we saw Scorpion killed by Raiden, only for the original Scorpion to reemerge seeking vengeance.

NetherRealm also confirmed the existence of a trio of additional characters joining the game’s roster within the Mortal Kombat 11 story trailer. Cassie Cage is described as “an elite Special Forces unit and daughter of the iconic duo, Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage, employs her lethal fighting skills to win every battle, with a relentless drive to measure up to her parents’ legacy.”

Jacqui Briggs also made an appearance. She’s a competitive fighter trained in kickboxing and martial arts, follows in the footsteps of her father, Jax Briggs, as a member of the Special Forces. She believes her duty is to protect Earthrealm and her family, no matter the risk.”

And finally, Erron Black took the spotlight a few times in today’s footage. He’s “a thrill-seeking outlaw hooked on the adrenaline of chasing his own pursuits. Black is a skilled crack shot selling his services to the highest bidder while dressed in classic western Outworld attire.”

The three characters join a continually growing roster of fighters for Mortal Kombat 11. Previously confirmed were Scorpion, Raiden, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, Skarlet, Baraka, Geras, Kano, D’Vorah, Kabal, Jade and Johnny Cage. Shao Kahn is also playable and included for those who pre-order the game.

Mortal Kombat 11 is just under two months away. It launches for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on April 23rd. It’s also coming to Nintendo Switch on May 10th.
