During the slew of news that came out of Sony’s State of Play, one of the most fun reveals was Cococucumber’s new Riverbond trailer. In a surprise twist, the developers revealed that it wasn’t just their unnamed hero that you’ll be adventuring with. They’ve also incorporated voxel versions of numerous heroes from other hit indie franchises.
The majority of this new Riverbond trailer puts the focus on these crossover skins. There are eight that we know of in total. They include Raz Aquato from Psychonauts, Bullet Kin from Enter the Gungeon, Juan Aguacate of Guacamelee, Demelza from Knights and Bikes, The Kid from Bastion, Shovel Knight from, well, Shovel Knight, Lover Mu of Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime and Robot 05 of Planet of the Eyes.
It’s a smart move from Cococumber to drive up publicity for Riverbond’s summer release. But outside of the fanservice, the game looks pretty cool in itself. It’s designed as a hack and slash dungeon crawler with one to four player couch co-op.
Environments and characters and voxel (think 3D grid) themed, and the devs are promising eight unique worlds. The boxy landscapes are destructible, and everything within the levels pretty much adheres to the game’s real-time physics.
Cococumber’s Co-founder and Art Director, Vanessa Chia, expressed her team’s excitement for their game, saying “Riverbond features a distinctive voxel art style that has earned praise from all those that have played the game. There’s a tactile joy in destroying things and exploding enemies into tiny cubes! Riverbond will let you embark on an adventure, cut some grass, decimate the beautifully handcrafted maps, and maybe find a secret or two along the way.”
An exact release date wasn’t given by the team, but they did confirm that the indie title will be coming this summer to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. For all the other hot indie news out there, check out Nerd Much?’s dedicated hub here.
