Insomniac’s Spider-Man PS4 Game: Release Date, Trailers, & Latest News

Spider-Man has never looked so good.

Insomniac's Spider-Man Game

Spider-Man is one of the most popular superheroes of all time and has transcended television, films, comic books, toys, and clothing. Yet, it’s been years since we had a truly amazing Spider-Man game, as the last few entries in this titular series have been either just okay or complete let downs. However, during the Sony’s E3 2016 press conference, our favorite web-slinger surprised everyone with a trailer for his newest title.

At this point, there is no disputing that Marvel is the king of superhero movies, but unless their property is “Legofied,” Marvel-based video games haven’t been having nearly as much success in recent years. Insomniac’s Spider-Man could very well be the title that breaks this curse and helps solidify this comic titan in the gaming space, especially with studio Insomniac Games, who are best known for Ratchet & Clank, taking the helm.

It has been just a day since the Spider-Man game reveal, and it’s already one of our most anticipated games of 2017. There is already some information leaking out — admittedly, not much, but some. Consider this post dynamic content, as we fully intend to update it with more news as it comes in.

Spider-Man PS4 Release Date

Sony did not give any Spider-Man release date, and said that they weren’t ready to talk about any timeframe for its release. Our best guess — at least, for now — is no later than Fall 2017, as the developer notes that it has been in development for “quite some time.”

Setting and Locations

Like most typical Spider-Man properties, the entire game will take place in an open world New York City. We do not know how big NYC will be or which boroughs will be included, nor how many buildings we will actually be able to enter. In the E3 trailer, it’s important to note that Spider-Man is moving in and out of buildings with no trouble, so it’s safe to say at least some structures will allow entry. What we also can decipher from this trailer is that the city is fully populated and will have numerous NPCs going about their day as you fight crime.

Also, during an interview with Geoff Keighley, Bill Rossman and Mike Jones of Insomniac Games revealed that this title will, in fact, be open world.

Developing…

Spider-Man PS4 Story

In an interview with Geoff Keighley  we learned that Insomniac Games will be focusing on not just a Super-Man story, but a Peter Parker one as well. They are focused on developing Parker as a character and seeing how the suit has changed him and his views. Though this is nothing new for Marvel, it’s clear that the story for this title will not simply just be tossed aside. The fact that they’re developing the character with and without the mask is, so far, the only real story details available, but in the E3 trailer we do catch a glimpse of a big guy that could be the classic villain Rhino.

Combat

Judging from the E3 trailer alone, it’s clear that both momentum and hand to hand fighting will play a large role in this game. While we still do not know the exact type of combat this will be, it probably will be more nuanced than just button mashing. Our best guess is a mix between the Infamous series’ use of speed, and popular combat mechanics found in titles like Batman: Arkham Knight and Mordor. At one point, we also see Spider-Man picking up a breaker box with his web and swinging it around at some baddies.

Consoles

Though there was some speculation after Sony’s press conference, it has since been confirmed that Insomniac’s Spider-Man title is a PS4 exclusive. What’s more, we recently learned that Insomniac’s Spider-Man will be PS4 Pro ready with full 4K visuals.

Other Notes

insomniac's Spider-man

During Insomniac’s interview with Geoff Keighley, Insomniac made a few interesting notes. First, they’re calling it the most ambitious Marvel game ever made. Secondly, to achieve their ambitions, they’ve got the “biggest team Insomniac has ever had working on a game.” In the studio’s 22-year history, this is Insomniac’s first time working on an IP that isn’t their own.
