Xboy Handheld was Considered by Xbox

The Xboy handheld was once considered to compete in the portable gaming market. While it was ultimately scrapped, the idea of it sounds pretty cool.

During the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered, former Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach discussed plans for the Xboy handheld. Sadly, prototypes were never made, but as Bach stated, “there were definitely drawings.

This wasn’t a one and done thing, either. Plans for the Xboy handheld come up more than once at Microsoft. In fact, there were other iterations that weren’t called Xboy. According to Bach, the hypothetical handheld was always referred to as “X something.”

So why was a prototype never created? “Because we just couldn’t focus,” says Bach. “We just did not have the bandwidth.”

In the long run, this was easily the better option for Xbox. Smartphones have filled up a majority of the mobile market. Even Nintendo has noticed a decline after the success of the Nintendo DS. “For us, it was a focus issue and as it turned out strategically it was a smart decision, but that’s somewhat accidental,” Bach said.

We think it’s always cool to hear about the cancelled projects in video games. All the time games or hardware are announced that never make it through to production. These little fragments of history often get lost, so we love talking about them when they come up.
