“Something’s coming. Maybe it’s Moriarty, maybe it’s not. But something’s coming.” That something is Sherlock series 4, and here we have our first glimpse at what’s to come. This first trailer premiered at San Diego Comic-Con today during the show’s panel. Present at the panel were Benedict Cumberbatch, Amanda Abbington, Mark Gattis, Steven Moffat, and Sue Vertue, and they confirmed what the trailer seems to suggest: that this will be the darkest season of Sherlock to date.
In addition to the ominous first words, we hear Mycroft’s voice warn, “The roads we walk have demons beneath. And yours have been waiting a very long time.” It ends on a lighter note, however, confirming Mark Gatiss’s statement that although this season has a darker tone, there will still be laughs.
We know that the end of series 3 teased Moriarty’s return, and this trailer seems to do so as well; however, Moffat has stated multiple times that he is definitely dead. Faking one’s death from jumping off a building is one thing, but a gunshot to the roof of the mouth has a definite finality to it. That’s not to say he couldn’t have set something in motion prior to his death, however, or that we wouldn’t love to see Andrew Scott return. We see our first look at Toby Jones as the villain here, though, and that maniacal laughter is positively fearsome.
Series 4 will wrap up filming within the next couple weeks and is on schedule to premiere in early 2017. The Victorian special may have helped tide us over, but we are anxious to see what the next season has in store for our favorite detective.
