Prideful Sloth, a small Australian based studio, with past Activision and Rocksteady staff, just announced an upcoming open world game called Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles. The game takes place on the stylized island of Gemea, “full of magic and fantastic creatures”. But it has now encountered an evil murk bringing its citizens great despair. The main characters mother has sent him to the island believing it to be safer than where they currently are. Like any parent, she hopes that her child will find his or her way in the world and that they will some day return safely home.
It is the player’s job as the hero to travel the lands (there are eight varying lands) joining with the ethereal Spriters to rid the world of this darkness. These include sunny beaches to snowcapped mountains. Each has its own plant and animal life, changing seasons, and a day and night cycle. As far as fantastic creatures go, they have shown fox, deer, alpaca, ox, and bear-like creatures among others.
Co-founder and lead designer also stated:
“Yonder features exploration and adventure inspired by classic fantasy franchises, and blends them with fully fleshed out but entirely optional farming gameplay. Adventure fans will instantly recognize Yonder’s mechanics, which are unified in a wholly original way, while finding themselves enraptured in the gorgeous animated world.”
The team claims to be focused on “detailed worldbuilding and player-driven narrative experiences” and has worked to make tasks like farming, crafting, cooking, fishing and brewing, more enjoyable as they help players build relationships with the NPCs and unlock different rewards. The game is set to release on PlayStation 4 and PC during the second quarter of next year but they will have a display at Playstation Experience. And the game is currently undergoing the Greenlight process on Steam.
