This morning, a new AAA video game development studio by the name of Cold Iron was announced, and it’s compiled of some Cryptic Studios veterans, including Craig Zinkievich and Shannon Posniewski. So, what is the new studio developing?
According to the press release, the newly compiled team is working on a ‘major’ original sci-fi game for consoles (yes, plural) and PC. The game is being developed on the Unreal 4 engine., and Zinkievich calls it a “AAA online action game”:
“We couldn’t be more excited to finally introduce the world to Cold Iron,” said the studio’s Founder and CEO, Craig Zinkievich. “We decided to start this studio last year with exactly one goal in mind: to create compelling games that we wanted to play absolutely all the time. To do that, we put together a pitch, built a great prototype, got fully-funded, and are now building an unstoppable team. We’re working hard on a AAA online action game that is literally out of this world, and we cannot wait to share it with you.”
The wording is unclear, but given the fact that the press release has a heavy emphasis on mentioning “MMO” — it’s mentioned eight times — we’re going to go ahead and assume it’s a sci-fi MMO of sorts.
Given the fact that the team has a breadth of experience in the MMORPG genre, including Neverwinter, Star Trek Online, Champions Online, and City of Heroes/Villains, we’d be seriously surprised if the AAA game they’re developing turns out to be an MMO. However, noting that they’re calling it an online “action” sci-fi game could also mean it’ll be Overwatchian in its nature. Again, the wording is vague.
Can Cold Iron do what Carbine Studios failed to do with WildStar and create an actual sci-fi MMORPG that’s worth playing? Time will only tell, but we certainly can’t wait to hear more about Cold Iron’s unannounced online sci-fi game.
We’ve reached out to Cold Iron for more information. But if you’re looking for something a bit more concrete to chew on in the MMO space, check out our list of the upcoming MMOs we’re looking forward to.
