No, you didn’t read that title wrong. Insomniac Games has teamed up with Gamestop for a passion project called Song of the Deep.
For the past year, Insomniac has been hard at work on this underwater side-scrolling game. Song of the Deep centers around a 12-year-old girl named Merryn. When her father goes missing, she builds herself a submarine and discovers an entirely new world in her search.
Gamestop is acting as the publisher for the new title, but they have no creative power. Instead, they are mainly handling the game’s promotional marketing. The game is expecting a Q2 2016 release digitally for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. For a physical release, you’ll have to venture to a nearby Gamestop for the retail exclusive copy.
By teaming up with Gamestop, Song of the Deep will see the same AAA launch experience that smaller games never see. Not only will Gamestop sell the physical disc, but several tie-in toys as well such as Pop vinyls.
More From Nerd Much?:
Insomniac has also partnered with Sterling Publishing to create a chapter book for children ages 8 to 12. Releasing on the same day as the game, the book will follow Merryn’s story and elaborate on parts of the game.
“The collaboration has felt very natural along the way,” says Gamestop’s Mark Stanley. “We’re really working every step of the way collaboratively by bringing in all the areas of GameStop — marketing teams, promotional teams — letting them come in and allow the Insomniac team to actually really focus on the game itself and making it everything they dreamt of it being.”
The next question is whether Gamestop will make more of these partnerships. Because this is the first time they have done something like this, the company would like to see how this experience with Song of the Deep plays out before they decide what to do next.
We here are excited to see what a partnership with Gamestop could mean. With a second quarter release, it is nice to see that we won’t have to wait long to find out.
