Sledgehammer recently tweeted a happy new year saying “It’s officially 2017! Some call it the zodiac year of the Hammer. Have a safe and fun New Year’s, everyone!” As far as I can tell, Sledgehammer is making a pun on themselves and are not referring to a historical hammer found in London, a soccer team, or any such titled “year”.
So this Tweet is definitely a tease about Sledgehammer’s upcoming game, likely another in the Call of Duty series as they are next on Activision’s rotating list. The included gif has some fans speculating that Sledgehammer’s next Call of Duty game will be placed sometime in the 20th century, either during WWII or the Vietnam War.

In support of the Vietnam setting, developer Michael Condrey sent out his own holiday wishes “Merry Christmas everyone, hope your day is joyous. Did you see our @SHGames card? Now, can you unsee our runner-up?” with an image of a M1911A Colt .45 pistol.
This gun is from the US Army around 1924 and on, used in WWII, the Vietnam War, the Korean War, and so on. What is important to note, however, is that in 2014 Sledgehammer was working on a unique and super gritty Vietnam War-era third-person shooter called Fog of War. However nothing more was said of it save for a handful concept art images. The game was cancelled when Sledgehammer was drafted to make Advanced Warfare instead. A lame exchange to be sure.

With the success of Battlefield 1, a game around the Vietnam war might just be the successful thing to do. It is a recent enough event to still be touchy subject to base a video game on, so I am very interested to see how Sledgehammer would handle it.
Would you like the next Call of Duty to stop it’s jetpack fuelled race to the future and return to the past instead? Let us know in the comment below!
