According to Kotaku, Sony is currently planning a new version of the PS4. This updated version will increase the graphical power and allow for games to run at 4K resolution.
Sony has allegedly told developers that this “PS4.5” or “PS4K” will not only support 4K for games, but it will also add additional processing power to enhance games on Playstation VR. Currently, the PS4 can output 4K photos and videos, but not for games.
Historically, console upgrades have proven unsuccessful. Take one look at the Sega 32X, Sega CD, or even the Nintendo 64 DD and you’ll see what we mean. This doesn’t mean we wouldn’t be interested in an upgrade, it just tends to confuse the consumers and fracture the market.
If Sony is truly working on a PS4.5, we find it much more likely that it will primarily be an improvement for their VR headset. The existing headset that is launching in October includes an external processor. Maybe this upgraded console would house the box within the actual console.
Whatever the case may be, it is still too early to make an educated guess on the future of a new PS4. If something gets announced, you can be sure we’ll let you know.
