In the report from Nikkei (translated by Dr. Serkan Toto), they state that some Wii U accessories have already ended production. The supposed plan is that Nintendo will slowly deplete its remaining inventory by the end of the year.
If this is true, this still doesn’t mean that you won’t see the Wii U on shelves in 2017. It’s no secret that they haven’t really been flying off the shelves. They have probably run the numbers already and know generally how long they can continue to sell units.
Please keep in mind that this doesn’t confirm anything about the Nintendo NX’s launch either. While they have historically released consoles in the fall, we still do not know whether it will go on the market in 2016 or 2017.
More From Nerd Much?:
Regardless of how this plays out, there is now doubt that this Wii U production news will stir the pot for gamers everywhere. It is times like these when I wish I was a fly on the wall at the Nintendo office.
