Everquest Next Cancelled, We’re Super Bummed

In a surprise move, Daybreak Games has announced that their highly anticipated upcoming MMORPG Everquest Next has been canceled.

According to Daybreak Games’ president Russell Shanks, the game was canceled because it simply “wasn’t fun,” and the developers were worried that it wouldn’t meet the expectations of the Everquest name.

It’s a surprising move because in August 2015 we found out that the devs shifted focus from Landmark to Next. But Daybreak reassures fans of the franchise that it’s in good hands, noting that “EverQuest in all its forms is near and dear to [their] hearts.”

The president also noted that they have a “passion to grow the world of EverQuest.” Hopefully, that means Daybreak will shift gears and get another EQ project into the works quickly.

EverQuest Next was one of our top 13 most anticipated upcoming MMOs of 2016, so it’s safe to say that we’re obviously a little disappointed. However, it’s all too rare when a plug is pulled on a game so late in its development, and it’s always a commendable move when the plug is pulled for reasons for quality, as opposed to waiting until post-release to issue an apology. So, kudos to Daybreak for pulling the plug before it’s too late.
