Nintendo Switch Game File Sizes Revealed

The file sizes of quite a few Switch games are turning out to be quite reasonable, as the console does come with 32 GB of internal memory.

So you won’t have to break out your SD card until you hit Dragon Quest Heroes I and II, which is 32 GB all on its own.

As some room needs to be left for the software of the Switch, there’s no way you can squeeze these games onto the internal memory. Dragon Quest Heroes is a fairly extensive game, never mind both of them at once, so it does make sense that it’s not as well compressed as Breath of the Wild, for example, which is at 13.4 GB.

All of these file sizes are in reference to the digital copy you can acquire through the Nintendo e-shop. The site also goes so far as to recommend at least a 32 GB microSD card in addition to the internal memory.

Thus far, the list looks like this for all the digital games:

  •  The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 13.4 GB
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 8.00 GB
  • Puyo Puyo Tetris – 1.09 GB
  • Disgaea 5 – 5.92 GB
  • Snipperclips – 1.60 GB
  • I Am Setsuna – 1.40 GB
  • Dragon Quest Heroes I & II – 32.00 GB
  • Nobunaga’s Ambition – 5.00 GB

Luckily, you can buy any old microSD card, as Nintendo has kindly allowed the Switch to be compatible with such cards up to a size of 2TB (though this large is not yet available). Right now, you can only get a microSD card that holds 512 GB for about $200, which is a little overboard. So for now, it might be best to stick with the 32 GB ones as Nintendo advises.
