Rune: Ragnarok, Open World Viking RPG, Announced

-

Human Head Studios, an indie developer with team members who worked on Rune, Prey, Bioshock Infinite, World of Tanks, and Batman: Arkham Origins, has revealed their solo game, Rune: Ragnarok. According to the studio, this is an open-world RPG nearly 20 years in the making.

Rune: Ragnarok is set during, you guessed it, Ragnarok. The Norse version of the end of the world! All the gods die in epic battles and the universe is swallowed by a giant snake, what could possibly be more suited to the video game genre. Except that the trailer says otherwise, so maybe the game is placed just before everyone dies in the legends.

Also as you might have guessed from the title, this game follows the original game, Rune.  This time, the player is plunked in the middle of a world where gods, beasts, and humans struggle to survive. The player may choose their allegiance with any of the Norse gods, though no word yet on exactly which Norse gods will be included in the game. Depending on the god chosen, the players will gain special abilities that will help them “raid enemy villages, fight the undead… sail to new lands,” and craft the weapons necessary to end Ragnarok once and for all.

Project director Chris Rhinehart (who do you think his Overwatch main is?) has stated that he has waited 17 long years to finally announce a Rune follow-up game. Rune: Ragnarok is in the spirit of the original game and will bring players the most intense and brutal combat the series has seen yet.

Publishers ESDF are also quite excited to be a part of bringing this game to life. ESDF managing partner Mass Candler is excited to bring this new game to “long-time fans and newcomers to Rune alike” in hopes that they will be as excited as they are about it.

No word about a Rune: Ragnarok release date just yet, but we’ll keep you posted.
